(solved) IDE HDD upgrade, emu doesn't find it

Postby ja-ki » Wed Apr 03, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi there,

just got a Western Digital 80gb scorpio blue IDE 2,5" drive and a converter to install it.
The drive itself starts spinning but the emu doesn't find it (EOS 4.7 E4XT Ultra) tried mounting it, the only thing the emu sees is the floppy drive.

I'm absolutely clueless!

What should I do?

Ha! It just recognised it! Activated the reduced spinup power consumption thing and the emu sees it.
formatting now :)

Okay, just got errors and it wont show up again.
tried a lot with the floppy (disconnecting, bridging the last two pins on the floppy connector, etc) it simply won't mount regularly...

any advice?

Usually when the Emu formats the drive it throws up an error screen, if you ignore it and perform a mount drives command everything should be good.
If this isn't the case it's one of the following...

1. A bad connection issue from either the IDE ribbon or most likely the 3.5 to 2.5 converter.

2. It could be a bad format, you could try formatting the HD from a PC in FAT and see if this resolves the issue.

3. Your HD is faulty

sidenote
The floppy drive should not effect the HD in any way, so I wouldn't even go there.

I just bought a usb to ide adapter for my computer (macbook)
It has 2,5 aswell as 3,5 connectors. I tried both with the adapter and without and it works flawlessly. Formatted it several times with MS DOS FAT and tried it again in the emu. it won't be seen and mounting won't help either.
I'm clueless...

Okay, I just solved the issue!

The easiest way I guess is to have windows (xp pro installed in parallels in my case).

you then have to create an extended partition via the disk management programm, hiding somewhere in the control panel.
Just activating the disk drive without actually partitioning it helped so the emu recognises it. Formated it in eos to fat and everything works. yehaw!

now I just have to wait until my cardreader arrives and I'm good to go
