Pitch Detection

Postby Prado Escondido » Sat Dec 11, 2010 2:40 am

I'm afraid I'm late to the party ... doesn't seem like much going on around here when I look at the index.

I just recently got Emulator X3 and I am blown away. I'd think this forum would be packed, based upon the amazing things Emulator X can do.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is whether you can figure out the pitch of imported samples, as opposed to acquired samples.

I have a collection of fx hits and synth hits I'd like to place into presets chromatically for one octave with the originally pitched sample in the middle and + and - 6 semitones around it.

It says when you import samples you can use pitch detection ... but I cannot seem to find in the manual how to use this to identify the original pitch of the sample.

Is this possible post importation?

How?

Thanks!

Yes, people come to this place when they need help/info for the hardware ... not for the software sampler.
EX3 has some really cool features but the GUI is really awful and the resources at EMU seem to bound to other things but the sampler line.

Pitch Detection only works when aquiring or importing samples.
When importing samples you should set method "Pitch Detect" and then hit the button "Set Original Keys".
The you will see that the "Original Key" for each sample is set to a new value, in case the last setting was not correct.

I read somewhere of Celemony Melodyne (Cubase 5 uses a similar technology), "Mixed in Keys" (http://www.mixedinkey.com) and Image Line DirectWave (http://www.image-line.com/documents/directwave.html) that should to the job also ... if you are not satisfied with EX3.

Vielen Danken, Mosrob!

Maybe I'll just have to get an Ultra!

Anyway ... I guess it is just one of the quirks of Emulator X. I see that when you acquire/ record and then chop you have an option with pitch detection to add the detected pitch to the sample file name.

Unfortunately this does not appear possible when you import samples ... even though the entry screen shows the detected pitch before you finish importing.

I have found one 'OK' work around: When importing I pitch detect and then make a preset using assign to original key. This makes a jumbled, useless preset for 'one shots' since multiple samples may have the same pitch and be loaded on top of one another on the assigned key ... but I can then go to the 'Voices and Zones' view and see what key the sample was assigned to and then duplicate and rename the sample with the proper pitch info.

Seems to be working ... and if it does, easier than analyzing and renaming in another program.

BTW ... just curious ... what don't you like about the interface? I actually find it pretty intuitive and easy to navigate.

It's not only the GUI. It is the whole handling of the software.

Everything is really small on larger screen resolutions like 1680x1050 or 1920x1200.

You are not able to create a Preset with just one sample where the Preset-name is the same as of the sample.
You can't use the keyboard shortcuts for "copy" (CTRL-C) & "paste" (CTRL-V) for transferring the name. You have to paste via the right-mouse-button menu.
You cannot add a sample from outside the "Emulator X3"-window by using drag & drop.
You should also be able to use MIDI-Controller to modify settings in the actual screen-context when editing voice-processing parameter.
Using the Library function eats up your time (and nerves while waiting).

Right in front of you, you have a really complex software-sampler and the workflow is really annoying.
I think I'm faster when editing my E4.
The whole handling reminds to an unfinished product although there are really outstanding features in Emulator X3 like the 3 Function Generators, Xtractor or Beat Analysis.

Gotchya!

This one I really agree on: "You should also be able to use MIDI-Controller to modify settings in the actual screen-context when editing voice-processing parameter."

But ... despite all, it still seems to have so many outstanding features (that I'm working through the Advanced Applications tutorials to get my head around.)

There was some buzz near the middle of this year on the Productions Forum Emulator X group http://www.productionforums.com/viewforum.php?f=17&sid=8602e9b02ea35f643595cf4ecc27dbbb that
Emulator X was not 'end of life' software and there might be something forthcoming around the first of 2011.

Wouldn't an Emulator X4 with all the niggly problems rectified be nice.
