crossfade options on an old esi4000

Postby russ » Sun Mar 20, 2005 2:50 pm

Im using an old esi4000, ive glued a bicycle part on to my mod wheel on my midi keyboard and then I glued a plastic crossfade tab on to the bicycle part-therefore my mod wheel is a bit like dj mixer crossfader. i thought i could program the mod wheel to act like a mixer crossfader to cut up loops and sounds but the best ive achieved is a slow crossfade between two samples. Does anyone know if it is possible to program the mod wheel to cut sounds up sharply without a slow fade-say for eg-no sound from 0-126 then sample sound kicks in at 127 in realtime?!-sorry its tricky to explain well-I want my mod wheel to perform like a dj mixer crossfader!
any help or tips appreciated.

Why don't you just draw in the cc in your sequencer. You can do a completely vertical attack on it. But you will also have issues with missed zero crossings, so a slightly slower value with cover that up. By drawing in the cc data, you can have extremely fast cuts and such.

Or you can just hook up a mixer between your kit and the out put and actually use a crossfader if you feel the need to do it live.

Thanks for the reply-I might try to write stuff in alright but thats what I was trying to avoid. I have hooked my dj mixer thru the outputs with minidiscs etc. but found it time consuming so I was looking 4 a faster option.I thought it would be possible to program how the sampler reads the modulation wheel in realtime-maybe with some secret button pressing(which does exist) or with the footswitch control. What I want is a huge demon realtime interface board laden with countless dials, buttons and levers to control all of the samplers functions-if Dr Who made tunes he would build this device for himself-until then ill check out the other options.

Ok, Im back at this problem again, does anybody know of a simple crossfader midi controller?, I cant find one on the interweb anywhere. I am drawing stuff in but still want the realtime effect of crossfading with a real crossfader. I find it strange that such a simple device does not exist.

I dived not deep into it, but what about an old Evolution X-Session, that might work for your purpose, haven't checked but think you'd get this cheap on ebay, there's a new X-Session by M-audio but that's USB only, named above has MIDI ports still in addition to USB, cheap plastic that all, you better not await good quality. Check it out here, there's the user manual there also under documents for all info (what the crossfader sends, interaction of USB to MIDI ports, i.e. if it works standalone with you're sampler) etc., hope you find out:

Dunno how good an ESI reacts to CC ( I left this range out), I more then guess an Ultra sampler will react better/faster to those, also there you could set up something in Ultras cords section with the so called Thumb Controller that would allow you to fast switch back and forth, as I understood you're more after that then "fading". For doing that you didn't even need a crossfader, just a button like on every MIDI controller keyboard. That just for added info, maybe helps you.
