Layering drum hits (prev. posted on DOA)

Tip on constructing "new" drum hits from rinsed standards:

What you want to do is layer your drum sounds. So in a preset you want to have maybe 3 voices with 3 different snare sounds. One might be on a band pass centered around 350Hz or so covering the bottom punch. The next might be on a bandpass centered around 750Hz which highlights the main timbre of the snare. The last might be on a highpass that cuts off freqs below 1500Hz (use your ears - I'm just throwing our numbers and I'm not in front of my kit now). Then mix the snares accordingly. You might want to try the flanging technique that I talked about in a previous post if you want a teched out sound. You can also try things like recording the sound out of the speakers and into a mic (an old hip hop trick). Try using sounds that are not drum sounds and using them as layers of a "finished" drum sound.

Think of your basslines in the same layered format ...

There's been a lot of discussion lately on "ghost hits." If using the layering technique above, try taking out the bottom (freq wise) hit as well as lowering the velocity on ghost hits. Or, if you've resampled your "compound" hit, try putting it on a highpass filter and taking the low freqs own for the ghost hit.

Sometimes, I'll grab ghost notes from a totally different kit and use them. This can sound quite effective. take a look at some BadCo. examples and you'll see what I mean...

Oh yeah, i forgot, Take a liitle off the sample start as well as well as knoking the pitch down a few cents (with the cords) as well as rolling off some top end and bottom end (i.e. muck around with the attack of the envelope)...Regards, Nads.
