Peak/Shelf Morph filter?

Postby Klaseed » Sun Jul 20, 2003 4:16 am

I've been wondering about this for a LONG time.

I don't really understand the controls on this filter at all, though I understand shelving EQs just fine.

If you go to this filter, the default settings for the two morph frames are:
Freq = 83
Shelf = -64
Peak = -64

and if you run a sound through this, you get a HUGE bass sound. But by my understanding, if the shelving filter is all the way down (-64) from 83 Hz, the bass should be seriously reduced.

So, what's going on here. How is it that these settings create massive bass? Anybody understand this thing?

Hmmm, I just read the other post about this.

Interesting that the Shelf switches to Peak when it's value is 0.

But I'm still unsure of what the Shelf is doing. It seems that when it's value is negative, it's actually a positive shelf. I guess I could just get used to this, but isn't this backwards. Shouldn't a negative shelf value be cutting frequencies, not boosting them?

that depends on if we are to assume that the value we are seeing in the emu actually represets gain, or frequency.

because of the bass getting loud... i would almost think that this is more of a lowpass shelf. it would filter out all the high end stuff from the center frequency.

you may want to pm madmax, or wait from him to see this post. i think he understands the peak/shelf filters better then most of us. unless someone else has some ideas...
