Fading modular basslines (big up Madmax)

Postby Klaseed » Thu Aug 21, 2003 8:50 am

Okay, I was just screwing around with Madmax's solution for getting basslines where each note starts with a different phase of an LFO (see viewtopic.php?t=160), and came up with a pretty cool little trick.

Set up three bass voices like Madmax suggests in that thread, so each voice starts with a different phase on it's LFO. We'll say the voices are on C3, C4, and C5.

Now, go into Group edit for each group, and set up a fade between that group and the group above or below it. So, from Voice Main, hit Next to get to Vces - KyWin. For the group on C3, set up a high fade of 12 notes - this will slowly fade that group out as you play up one octave. For the C4 group set low and high fades of 12, and for the group on C5, set up a low fade of 12.

What you have now is 3 voices, each modulated slightly differently, that will fade into each other as you play between that voice and an adjacent voice.

You'll immediatly notice that the pitch is raising or lowering as you play up and down the keyboard, which sounds crap, so go into Tuning for each voice and turn non-transpose on.

NOW, you have three voices, modulated differently, that will fade into each other across the keyboard (play all the keys, not just the root notes of C3, 4, or 5), without pitching up or down. This sounds really cool, giving a chunky sound that has a lot of variation in it, but is still obviously the same basic sound.

The non-transpose means you can't pitch this bassline, which could be a problem, but maybe one of ya can figure out a solution? Or we could just live with it :)

Anyway, check it out, it's much less complicated than it sounds, and the result is pretty nice.

Easy solution (but it will take some work) - Make each group's spread one note long (don't need more than that anyway), and then make lots of groups up and down the keyboard, all pitched to whatever pitches you need.
