sample trigger question.

Postby Jem10 » Fri Feb 02, 2007 10:30 pm

Hi Guys!

I have what I'm sure is a simple question, but it has me beat none the less. How do I assign a sample to be triggered in it's entirety from a single key press. For instance, when you trigger a cymbal the whole sample plays despite releasing the key almost instantaneously.

Put me out of my misery!!

So, you want the sample to play all the way just after pressing the key and releasing it? Two ways. One... you can lach the sample. If you do this though, you'll have to press the key again to unlach the sample and press it again. The other option is to set the decay or release all the way up to the max. That way you'll have the decay or release play throught the entire sample with out you having to hold the key down or having to press it again to disengage the latch. The issue where is that velocity tends to become an issue. You'll need to turn the velocity off because you find that if you do a rapid key press, the sample seems to come out quiter. But... it all depends on how you play the keyboard.

The other thing is to simpley extend your event out on the sequencer your using. It all depends on what you need to have happen. Those are three ideas for you. Hope they help.

Thanks very much for that. Seems like adjusting the envelope is gonna be the way forward for me. I could have sworn that I read in the manual somewhere there was a simple option that could be selected for this, but if it ever was there I cant find it now. :???: Too many hours in front of a PC.
Thanks again. 8-)

I must confess that as far as this issue is concerned, I prefer the Akai system, where for each sample within the program (preset in E-mu parlance), you can select "Loop in release", "Loop til release", "No loops" or "To end" (S1000).
The latter setting triggers the whole sample and the voice is released when sample playback has ended. Ideal for drum sounds.

Exactly. But I felt sure that this option was somewhere in the EOS manual. I've read and re-read it both hard copy and online and I cant see it anywhere so I must have been mistaken.
Oh well, envelope editing for me!

I had the same issue with my old Esi-4000. If I'm not mistaken, the VCA envelope had a "hold" parameter, which - as the name suggests - held the note for a user-defined amount of time until it reached the release stage. So the same effect could be achieved with a gate envelope and the right amount of hold. It took me ages to find the parameter, which sadly does not exist on my E4K.

just turn the release of the samples you want to play out up to 90-100 and that's it.

I like having it be flexable as far as sample release though because then you can send short notes and get gating/stuttering effects .

I found this page once which explains a good way to do that:

http://www.basscadets.co.uk/emu/cords.htm <<(link is now busted 6-13-07)

To quote the page:
"One shot" drum hits

This is when you hit a note and a drum sound will play in its entirety irrespective of note length - you see this on most synths.

Go into cords and route Key+ to Keysust with an amount 1 or above. Of course you could also put the release right up in the Amp Env, but I think this is easier.

Also you might want to assign a Solo mode to the voice to stop phasing - i.e. in drum roll where the end of the last note could overlap the start of the next.
