Tips for hihat processing?

I'm still having a hard time getting my hats to sound/sit right, even after 2 years... :cry: They still sound too harsh, not that soft-but-still-ruff sound that drumnbass uses so often.

Anybody have any tips for hihat processing in the emu? Filtering, or setting up in the preset or anything, I could use some help.

Maybe it's not that you need to process the hats you HAVE, but instead get some new hats? What's your source? Tell us more... And give us audio samples that illustrate what you're talking about so we can hear it and help.

Hats are tough ... hmmmmmm ... OK you could try a 2pole band pass with no q (it depends what you mean by harsh really) but sometimes that makes the sound too thin. I'd also try using sounds other than an actual high hat. Try pitching snares up or down and putting them on a highpass and making them really short. Or making a chhh sound into a microphone. Shit .. I'm out of ideas.

Ok Ok what about a band pass and then some distortion to add back some of the upper harmonix.

YEah, I've been toying with snares as hats, and getting some okay results, but I still need to work on 'em some.

I'll try to post some files tonight, but I'm still at work and it's late, so I may not get around to it til tomorrow.

Okay, maybe this is too much, but anyway.....take two different hats, lay out 8 of each in your sequencer, with any kind of filter or effect on one, start the sequencer, modulate with the pitch wheel or whatever is controlling your filter, and resample it all. Then go through the new sample and see if anything stands out. Just an idea.

if it's harsh, and what i think of as harsh: then it is the kind of drum track that makes you grit your teeth and you can't hear much more then that shrill sound.

i would almost say that you need to do some eqing, maybe use a lowpass filter on it, just very slight though on them to make the shrillness go.

it would be neat if you could give an example of what kind of cymbals you are after. like a song that you have that you want to make cymbals sound like. that would help i think. if it is like the amens, that is, well a sample, and realy not too much having to do with the actual producer.
