When you've got a bassline and it plays really loud in one range of keys but a lot lower on another (due to freqs in the bass?) is key+ a good cord to go for to fix it - any pointers to possible settings.

This is something that always bugged me a bit. What I usually do is make a copy of the sample & place them on seperate octaves, then mix & balance the volume, boosting the lower note (using gain, normalizing, compression, or whatever) until they are even in volume. But if there's an easier way that would be grand.

what you guys are experiancing is the fletcher and munson curve. these guys made a curve by testing individauls and having them identify what pitches seemed louder. frequencies tend to appear the loudest at 1 to 6khz, even though they are played at the same loudness.

as for a trick on this, shit, don't really know. get a copy of the fletcher and munson curve and maybe use the fade to taper the loudness at the louder frequencies. that is about it.

You need to be really careful with this. Take into consideration the fact that on YOUR monitor speakers/stereo system/headphones there might be a different frequency response curve than on others' systems. Test your mixes on a variety of systems/headphones/car stereos/etc to make sure that everything really is balanced.

What kind of monitors is everyone using? And how are they?

I have Event 20/20bas. Very nice, in my opinion, although friends complain that they don't have as much bass as the Mackie 828s. But they were a LOT cheaper than the Mackies and I live in an apartment so it's not like I can have 'em thumping anyway

I use the 20/20bas as well. I think for what I do, they're pretty dang good. The Mackies sound a bit better, and have better bass response, but for some reason I'm wary of any speaker of that size with bass response like that (I'm probably just paranoid).

I've heard the Tannoy Reveals, and the detail is ->amazing<-, but they completely lack a bottom end, so they're right out.

Supposedly, the best monitors are the Yamaha NS-10s... Not because they sound good (they sound like ass), and not because they have good bass response (I read that the bass sounds like someone tapping on a cardboard box)... but because if you can make your mix sound really good on that utter shyte, you have a hit on your hands
