Bad midi timing or bad patch programming?

Hey, using a emu e6400 ultra with eos 4.61

i have made a drumsequence on my sequencer.. now i wish to record this as a drumloop into my emu, and trigger the drumloop from the emu, using the good tools it provides. So, i record the loop and make sure that the startingpoint is on spot. But when i play it back with the bass, i feel its maybe lagging a bit behind.. is it slow miditiming on the emu?? is it knowen.. is there anything i can do to improve it?

I've found modern PCs to be lacking in regards to MIDI timing. I would suspect that the problem lies here and not with the Emu. With Steinberg software I have noticed an improvement since using the system timestamp found in the device menu, though I can't say for definate if this will improve your situation. USB MIDI seems to be especially bad in this regard.

Also are you triggering a lot of other stuff (Keys/Pads etc) at the same point as the drums? If so it can help alot to move the instrument parts ahead a few ticks so that they don't occur at exactly the same time. As MIDI is a serial protocol notes actually sound one after the other, even if they are played simultaneously. The difference is so tiny that it won't effect the feel or timing of your other parts, but will reduce MIDI 'choke'.

Finally, in Cubase tracks at the top of the arrange page took timing priority over tracks further down. I don't know if this is still the case however.

Cheers

I know this guy that writes jingles and have tons of synths which all were usb-connected to one single mac running protools hd. One day after about a year or so of trying to get the usb-midi to work properly he just throws all the usb away and use the old plain midi-connections. He found usb to be slow and unreliable when runnning heavy midi through it. It works just fine with only 4-5 synths hooked up, but when he connected more than that the usb became sorta overloaded, and would sometimes send out data in small "explosions" causing timing to go to hell.
