VMware Fusion Mac OS X Intel & SCSI Sample Dump

Postby kalide » Thu Sep 18, 2008 10:31 am

Has anyone experimented with this yet to see if we could set up either a WinXP or even a Win98 VM under Mac OSX so we could use USB-SCSI devices under a VM ?

It can be done in Linux and Akai Samplers it appears (at least generically):

Ok, finally catching up on the long list of "projects" whilst I have some time off.

First, I have been exploring VMWare Fusion on the Mac OS X/Intel Macbook to determine if SCSI is possible to allow old SCSI sampler apps to run on a Mac and talk to the Emu.

So far, I have managed to get a Microtech USB SCSI interface to talk to VMWare ok, and also recognize a removable drive.

Next step after the next round of post Christmas drinking and leftovers is to get it to talk to a sampler.

So far it looks promising.....anyone else have this configuration ?

So far the Microtech USB-SCSI interface seems to be a load of pants as far as I can tell with some hacking around on OS X and VMWare.

Problems:

1. Seems to only allow devices to have a SCSI ID of Zero
2. Mounts itself as a Mass Storage Device - not a true SCSI device - so useless for anything other than pretending to make a hard drive a "USB Drive"
3. Inflexible termination architecture -needs term power

Will keep on hacking, but I doubt I can do anything on VMware Fusion with this.

The Ratoc devices might be better, but they still command a high price vs the Microtech kit which I picked up for $10 and thus could risk it if it didn't work.

I haven't tried this yet, but can't you just fit an ATTO SCSI card in the mac? And why do you need to run windows? Is there no mac s/w left that down sample dumps anymore? Damn, I might have to stick with a G4 for a while. At least I can use ReCycle and Peak I guess.

My Macbook Pro and iMac can't take an ATTO scsi card.....plus software support for SCSI in OS X Snow is pretty much gone.

anyhow, using FAT32 and USB IDE removable drives/CF drives work well for transferring basic wave.

I'd just like to be able to use recycle for bulk dumps on the macbook.

Cheers

Yes, I'd like to have this working too, but am just at the initial investigating stage. This thread's quite useful for more general os x scsi adapter advice:

I have one of the Belkin Firewire/SCSI adapters mentioned in the thread here, so I will try it now and report back..
