Triggering a series of samples...........

Postby Machine » Tue Mar 16, 2010 12:39 am

Hello, I came across this great forum yesterday and maybe someone here can help?? I revived my old e6400 specifically to help me with the following:-

I need to trigger a series of three random samples from three separate 'banks' from a single midi event/ hit/ Note on. (it's a button press)

At the moment I'm up and running with a random sample from one bank but am unsure as how to proceed now, must admit that I'm at a loss but maybe I'm missing something really simple?

I'll try to explain what I'm after.....................

Note On > Trigger Random Sample from bank A > Trigger Random Sample from bank B > Trigger Sample from bank C

The next sample to be triggered once the first has finished and the samples won't all be the same length...........

This is for a sound effect project BTW.....am I making sense??????? is this possible????!

Thanks for any help in advance.

The "combinatorial random wave-sequencing"-issue

Postby mosrob » Tue Mar 16, 2010 4:59 pm

Your issue sounds like Combinatorics: "Sampling without Replacement" (like a Tombola)

A "random wave-sequencing" can't be done with this sampler.

You need some kind of "Arpeggiator" that chooses one key/note randomly out of a group of keys/notes, where this group has to be defined/setup first, and excludes every key/note that has been played before ... from being played again ... before all other keys/notes of this group have been played.
Each of these keys/notes represent a different sample/voice or whatever.

This is not possible with EOS in my opinion.

I can imagine that you can do something very similar with MIDI-CC messages that initiate a Sample Re-trigger AND at the same time initiate a Cross-Switch of layered voices in one Preset (RT-Window) while a note is played and held.

One issue is the detection of the sample-end which should be used as a signal to start the next sample.

You need something like an Envelope-Follower to detect the End of the Sample (which result is SILENCE) and in the resulting step generates a new MIDI-CC message that initiates the Cross-switch of the Layer AND the Sample Re-Trigger.

You need a Noise-Gate/Expander for the detection of the silence. (The volume falls below a specified threshold.)
This Noise-Gate/Expander has to have a Side-Chain Output to somehow control (CLOCK-signal) a Sample-and-Hold ciruit to generate a random control-voltage (from a White Noise) that has to be converted via a CV-to-MIDI converter into one or two specified MIDI-CC messages that are received by EOS and do the rest of the work.
