Drum Preset - How to set up?

Postby Zenkodo » Mon Aug 08, 2011 9:58 am

I'm new to this machine (E6400 Ultra EOS 4.61) and working my way around the manual etc but would welcome any tips on how best to set up a preset for drums.
Eg, how to set up;
• 1 voice per key,
• setting original key and transpose values etc.
• effects levels etc for individual voices
• setting up filter controls etc for individual voices

At this stage I'm a bit confused by the emu terms 'groups' & 'links'.
Also, how would I use another preset as a 'template'? Cos that sounds like a good plan.
I know this is quite basic stuff but if anyone feels like sharing their wisdom I'd be grateful. Or, if there's any newbs like me want to share what they are learning.

Great site this. Very glad to have found it.

Thanks ☯

not sure your gonna be able to have different effect levels for different voices within one preset (unfortunately) - I hope I am wrong about this though......

Tbh what iv been doing is building EQ'd /processed beats/breaks as per usual in software & transferring to the EMU. Then running them 'hot' into my soundcard (0404 USB) with the 'not very good imo' soft limiting off - sounds really big & loud even though its clipping slightly at certain points....gunno keep doing this - really like the sound.

btw I recommend Jahfunks' zip drive setup - its really handy.

I did some resampling 'in the box' in the ultra the other day & mapped out loops to individual keys in a preset. I think i probably turned non transposing=on in the preset aswell - as you prolly need to do for a drum preset.

For drums you would need to select the individual voice (ie. kick) & dial in settings etc. then select the next sound - rinse & repeat. Its a little bit fiddly making sure you are not editing all voices instead of 1 voice at first.

After this you could course tune & edit cords/filters/envs in the voices (kick/snr etc) as your sequence is running till they sound ok.

..still trying to get it properly figured out myself tbh.

@tpotcardiff
Thanks for reply. What is @JAHFUNK 's zip drive setup ? I'm guessing USB zip drive on the PC to transfer files to zip drive on the EMU. So, will the PC recognise zip disks formatted on the EMU and vice versa? if so that would be great.

I will be looking at mapping drum sounds again later. Thanks for your help.

For a drum/loop preset
Am i right in thinking that effects differences between voices need to be sorted by assignment to main or sub outputs?
Any advice on that would be welcome.

yeh - have a zip drive for the EMU & another for the PC - works nicely. yeh the PC recognises a FAT formatted disks so even Zip100 will almost fill up full RAM.

I'm on winXP but I guess most OS recognise the FAT format.

RE: fx, I think that a preset can only go to a Sub (fx) out. don't know for sure but thats what it looks like.

I'd better look for a Zip for the PC then.

I'm getting the hang if this now. Mapping single samples into a preset is no problem. I can work with the sub outs - I'm using all eight outs from the emu. The more I find my way round this machine, the more I like it.

Beat Munger - good for quickly working out tempo and also swing value - handy that.

Re Disk format - my PC is Windows Vista which does recognise FAT. My EOS is 4.61 not sure how that formats disks but my PC wasn't happy with a floppy formatted with EOS 4.02

What EOS are you running ?

Hi Zenkodo
Only EOS 4.7 is able to work with FAT formatted disks.
If you want to import stuff to and from your PC/Emu then you need to get it.
It will allow you to post your own stuff here and download and import banks from this site, such as the one I will post shortly.

I am working on a drum bank with instructions on how tweak it with c/controllers and info on how to use it as a template.
It will allow EQ, and effect sends on the fly.
I am making this bank with hundreds of kicks and snares and along with the hats rides toms and perc, it will be about 500 hits in size so you should be able to make up a fair few kits by dialing up any of the sounds to customize your own kits.
I just hope the final file size will be up-loadable to this site.
Later ;)

JAHFUNK,

Thanks a lot for that reply. Very helpful. I will look at upgrading to EOS 4.7 over the weekend. I'll be interested to see your drum preset. Sounds good.
And I'll look for a USB zip drive in the meantime. ( just missed one on eBay today :)
Cheers

This sounds amazing, did you ever put it online? Would love to give it a try...

Yes I have built the bank. It was too large to post.
I will make a version with fewer drum samples once I have resolved a problem with my sampler.
The power supply is dying. I have removed the RFX card and that helped for a good while, now however the power demand of the HD is proving too much for the PSU.
I need to get a new power unit befor I can sort the drum bank.
