Modulating Filter Res on E6400

Postby DJFracture » Mon Feb 09, 2004 1:11 pm

is it possible to constantly modulate the filter res? ie, with an envelope or mod wheel.

it seems to me you can only switch between two values via a note on message?

If you're talking about "constantly" modulating the filter resonance do you mean like looping it? You can do that by routing an LFO to the FIL RES in the MOD matrix/cords screen. Adjust the value to 100% or whatever you want. Then Zoom into the LFO screen and adjust the LFO's rate. That will give you a constantly modulated FIL RES. You could also route one of the ENVelopes to the FIL RES and adjust the ADSR to your liking. Then loop the envelope. Using the ENV as the control source for the FIL RES gives you much more control. Using the LFO is more or less an up and down motion-depending on how many LFOs you route to it. Using and ENV lets you shape the FIL RES with more detail.

There's a trick I read a long time ago on the E-Mu site for creating real-time filter modulation that's supposed to sound like analogue synths... And it doesn't require 4.7.

Basically:

You set up your preset with two voices. Cord settings, filter settings, etc, on both voices are set up exactly the same. On one of the voices, though, you set up your filter resonance to 100% and amp volume to 0. Then you set up a cord controlling amp volume, set it to 100% control. So when you turn up that cord, it will fade in the resonance. I've played with that trick quite a bit and I find that it's good to set up the same cord on your other voice so that it fades down just a bit so you don't get too much noise. Other than that, though, it really does sound pretty good.
