Riddle me this you corders!

Postby scsi bob » Sat Feb 14, 2004 3:46 pm

Hi,

I'm back again with another cording riddle which I'm sure there must be a solution to. I'll try and explain it as clearly as I can hehehe...

I've got a loop, say it's perfectly trimmed to 1 bar or whatever

I've got a hardware midi controller that's a slider and can transmit on a CC (say 21 for emu's midi A or whatever) to the emu

Now I want to play the loop, but I want to be able to move the data entry slider and have it move the loop point in the loop so say at one extreme it plays the loop in full, I pull it down to half way, it moves the loop point to exactly 1/2 way through the loop (so plays the first half of the loop over and over continuously), then if I move it to near 1/4 position it'll loop the first beat over and over.

Obviously I don't want it moving the loop point to a % of the loop length, as it'd start looping out of time and stuff, so it'd have to be quantized based on the nearest beat to where the data slider is kinda thing.

Can anyone cord me up? Cheers in advance for reading my dilemma.
I've gone.

Use Ableton Live ;)

Seriously though, I think I know what you want to do as I too wanted to get the same sort of thing a while back but with breakbeats. I found a clumsy way of doing it by using Realtime Crossfade with three voices assigned to one midi note.

The downside of this workaround is that you will have to use 3 seperate samples instead of 1. Each sample having a different loop point. The nice thing about using realtime crossfade is that you can specify exactly where you want the voice to cut into each other - in your case 64 and 96 I suppose. Personally I prefer to use 0-1, 1 - 126 and 126 -127 for zones. This is because I use faders alot and find it easier to change zones in time when you know that they only change at maximum, minimum or somewhere in the middle.

Yeah what you say about the controller zones is exactly right. That's what I need to do, but definately using the emu.

Someone told me only little poofy pansies used ableton live - don't know if they were right, I personally can't comment on the matter.

 LMAO

I have a love/hate affair with Ableton. I find features which seem impossible to do on the emu but then I always end up finding a workaround of some kind. It's great because all this new software coming out makes me look at the emu in a different way.

The majority of the workarounds usually come from realtime xfade, my favourite being programming drum fills that are triggered by faders or buttons on my Kenton. It would be nice if there should be a Preset upload part of this forum where we could dump nifty bits of cord work.

Been think exactly the same thing - most topics seem to be about add-ons and compatability - not about making presets and cords. I think I'll post a poll or heck, just do it

I think you should just do it, I'll post a few up if you do.

To be honest it's something that emu should have done ages ago, they should have supplied a load of preset templates either by floppy or online.

You're completely right. We need to work together as a community to develop trickier and trickier setups to do cool stuff, and lay a foundation for future emu users to take our work further.

Also, EMU should have actually published a proper description of all the cords with examples, but now it's too late seeing as they've sold out to make bubblegum, I mean software.

Software is great if you want to draw pictures and type some stuff, but PLEEEAASSEEE, if you want to make a seriously meatly track you need a room full of stuff. Saves on heating too. I still use one of them original computers that takes up a full floor in a high rise building... in fact, I'm typing this now by swiping punched cards through my user interface (that's a little beige slot on the front).

Keep it real. Say no to software, and if you do say yes, make sure you don't pay for it - that'll teach em.

A more elegant solution would be to open ya break in Recycle, adjust the 'Sensitivity' slider to taste. Create a 'Preset' in the EMU, now tell Recycle to spit the slices of the loop to the EMU and Export MIDI file to your sequencer.

Now in your sequencer just copy the group of notes that are going loop to your specification, for the desired time.... You have much more control this was. In addition, each note is set to a different voice after when it was sent from Recycle. This will allow u to filter each voice separately or allow u to group specific voices an filter/process them separately.

This is very powerful and much more flexible than any cords option.

Does this allow me to change the way it's looping in a live situation? Cos that's what I want. I feel using recycle and moving little midi notes around on screen does tend to cramp my creativity for certain things.

U didn't specify live in your original post. But anyways, no, the method i presented would not be ideal for live :D

however, u could just make a copy of the sample and set the Start/End point and the loop point so that it triggers at the middle of the sample like in your example then assign it to a different note.

U could do this several times for different start/end/loop points for each copy assigned to a different key...during a live situation u could easily switch to any of the loops.

ez huh

Well I think Drayon's idea is a good one. ie. make a copy of the sample with different start end points...if you don't want to assign them to different keys use real time crossfade. It doesn't have to be a fade it can be a distinct chop. ie. when controller value is at 0 it plays sample 1 as soon as it hits 20 sample 1 drops out and sample 2 kicks in and so on. And I use mostly hardware by the way  so far ;)

Just realised this is what illinformed was on about as well!

bah, addicted to software ??? im probably the biggest anti software nazi around. Probably stands to reason why i have 3 fully loaded E4 Ultra's and a shedload of real synths, samplers and outboard :finger:

btw, my second offering requires no software at all....all that looping is done in the EMU :spliff:
