sampling / resampling experimenation

Postby palamino chuck » Mon Jun 14, 2004 3:59 am

hey fellas,

i heard that dilinja would record his bass synth notes to DAT and then keep on sampling & recording over and over again until he achieved the level of warmth he was looking for.

i don't know how accurate that rumor is but this prompted me to do some testing so i tried dropping some simple juno samples to tape. slightly redlined them so it kinda gave a nice ass feel to them. then re-sampled those bitches into the e-mu and HOT DAMN, that shit sounded so nice.

anyhow, i was really impressed with the results but i was kinda curious if you all had your own preferred methods of resampling your tones and what not... anything using tape (hell, even casette tape) certain pre-amps, etc...

the experimentation with sampling has made me really appreciate the richness of the A/D converters and the over-all sonic characteristics of these e4 babies. i might even try sampling a finished tune into the e-mu prior to running some of the waves mastering plug-ins i've been really fond of recently. it might not be the best idea but what the hell, you don't know until you try i guess.

HOLLA 8-)

I recently rediscovered my old s1000...That sampler can't do much but the recording engine as an exponential (my guess) amplitude response that made all my synth sound usable. When i recorded those sample back into the emu...the magic gets buffered out. The emu kind of gave an image that is a bit more brighter but the voodoo contour dissapeared. Maybe that what's happening with tape...You acheive an natural attack and decay...one that looks like that ) (

the recording engine of the emu is not capable of doing that.

maybe it can when the gain is at -18 and it receives a loud signal

these emus certainly have their distinct flair and character when it comes to affecting samples (or not affecting them in some cases)

i know what you mean about akai's tendencies...

an aspect that i really like about emu's is that they really do a good job of coating the sound and enriching the lower end of the spectrum. so much that at times i end up using my asr-10 as a dedicated drum module if i want that crisp ass in your face kind of feel that at times can be hard to achieve.

anyhow... i'm dying to get a really nice preamp to warm the fuck outta my sounds and continue the sample/resample experiments.
ahhh, it's so easy to waste away hours in front of my baby on the quest for wicked sounds.
what a fucking geek i've become!! ahaha

Gotta love the DILLI!

I hear now he's all software'd up... maybe with a G5 or something and said that now 'what you put in is what you get out'. I took it to mean that for the first time you (the artist) will have that original vibe stay intact even when mixed down. That was always my problem, that when I transferred it to the computer for editing/mixing, it'd lose something. A better soundcard helped but not much. the x factor, whatever. Grooverider was with him on this point too, loves the G5.

Anyway, it's all good but I love the way the original junglists would go to certain measures to get a sound, even if painstaking by today's standards. I'm MR Painstaking, LOL! Anyway I bet Dilli has those old sounds now locked down as samples on the new system, whatever it is.
