6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Hi there guys, I hav'nt been on this forum in quite some time! Hoping to be a little more active on here from now on!!

My question for the board is regarding the 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O board for the Ultra series samplers (non ultra D-WAM not compatible)

I have been speaking with a close friend Ja Ki whom I'm pretty sure uses this message board a little also?! Anywho we have been speaking about potentially making the ASCII connection ourselves if this is possible?

If anyone has information regarding this please help me out. I really want to connect my e6400 Ultra to a ASCII Keyboard and stop using the main panel on the emu. Getting very into preset editing and all the technical chord editing these days so the keyboard would be a huge help!

Kind regards from a fellow EMU lover, Leon :-)

I also recently added some new emu tutorials to my youtube page, search Glyphicdnb and see what you think..

Hi Leon,

This is a drawing of the schematics for the ASCII (DWAM) board taken from the service manual, which I believe is downloadable in pdf format from deepsonic (search EMU EOS Technical Documents).

ASCII_Scematic.png

Whether or not this is all the info you need to build one I'm not sure, but seeing these are impossible to find now it could be worth trying to build. Luckily enough my Ultra has the port installed and it is totally worth having.

Good luck, and if you guys go ahead let us know how you go. I do see Ja-Ki post now and then on DOA still.

Jason

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Does anyone finally attempted a DIY approach yet ?
I read in several places there's a thread on a facebook group.
Did you know if it worked ? (Can't check myself, as I don't own a facebook account)

Does anyone have the full dwam option and can supply hd front and back pcb photos ? I've been into this project for more than two years now. Disappointed and started from scratch, I'm planning to clone from the original but unluckily no HD photos can be found on the internet.

hey lame_turtle,
Did you tried with a CS8411-CP chip installed ?
May be this chip is needed for EOS to see the extension, bringing a pin high.

yes. This is the actual audio receiver chip. For sure it won't work without it. The other chip is for ascii and is preprogrammed.

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

For Ultra samplers, the 6862 board contains only one chip (CS8411-CP) to put on the motherboard.
http://samplersonacid.com/legacy-emus-o … 0.php.html

For non ultra samplers, the 6815 board contains two chips.
CS8411-CP and CS8402A-CP
https://www.ebay.fr/itm/6815-Digital-I- … SwTiRZgE9S

If you try to clone 6862, your sampler is a Ultra one, right ?
The ebay seller in the link above specify that 6815 is not compatible with ultra line.

Looking at the schematics,
http://www.deepsonic.ch/deep/docs_manua … uments.pdf
page 272 "SCHEMATIC MAIN E4 ULTRA RACK V2 sheet 9"

I don't see a second chip ( like CS8402A-CP) on the board.
Only 6 connections from ascii circuit to the connector CN502

the CN502 have to be wired with a lot a pins to ground (all odd pins)
18, 20, 22 pins to VCC.

Did you tried that ?

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Yes I have an ultra. 6815 won't work even if rewired correctly.. I've tried icon_razz

Yes cn502 is a bugger on the layout but i think it is wired correctly . (also rather rare connector icon_razz )

If you want to help, I'm designing a new pcb, as I told you starting from scratch again .. If you can help design the pcb then pleease be my guest.. I would os much prefer to clone from a real one.. Even hd photos for having a rough idea of the layout would be great .

Have fun

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Ok, cool !
I traced the acsii circuit yesterday on eagle, to see what's it looks like on a PCB.

I searched for act125 equivalents in DIP14 format, as i'm not confortable with smd.
I don't know what kind of ferrite use. But sure it can work without, for testing.

Could you confirm if you added the CS8411-CP chip, and if the options are enabled on EOS.
Second, have you checked if your keyboard outputs something (on pin 2 & 3, on the din socket)
Last what buffers IC (act125) did you use ?

I can help for PCB, but with eagle free version limitations ( double side 8x10cm max board size)

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Switch from eagle to anything or go thief, free version won't work for this project.

I don't know the ferrite either and this plus alot of other questions would be solved if we had some photos icon_razz.
For the act125 I use an act125 icon_razz . I did not realize that you are not planning to do this smd. If you want equivalents I can look it up for you, but me I'm doing it smd like the original. I'm really worried about the signals integrity by going through hole and extending all those lines so much. I'm not a pro though, maybe it is possible.

Haven't checked keyboard output yet, it's the only thing I don't actually care on the dwam icon_razz Not that I'm leaving it out, just the last thing to check icon_razz .
Yes options are easily enabled even without the card in working state.

Switch from eagle to anything

Usually I export as PDF, not manifacturing in a Fab, with gerber. I stick to small module, and/or stitch in Illustrator.

I don't know the ferrite either and this plus alot of other questions would be solved if we had some photos tongue.

I found many 600ohm @ 100mHz at mouser.com in SMD (but nothing in through hole)

For the act125 I use an act125

DIP14 74HC125
https://www.mouser.fr/ProductDetail/Tex … 8BBCvLc%3d

I'm really worried about the signals integrity by going through hole and extending all those lines so much. I'm not a pro though, maybe it is possible.… I don't actually care on the dwam

I'd like to use a keyboard, naming is a pain (but I owned samplers where it was worst !).
Which ins/outs interest you the most on this extension ? I think Midi, world clock and Keyboard could work even in a cheap version. Everywhere ACT125 buffer are used, is simple CMOS logic, nothing critical.

ESU/EAB is another story. I don't have any experience in audio-digital signals domain, just in analogue ones.

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

For me e-remote works good, naming and navigating is easy (same section previous post you can find it ). I think I'd prefer it from ascii since I don't have to have two keyboards and I do everything from my main pc keyboard. AES/EBU externally clocked from word clock is my only real interest . Also second midi is a good addition.

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

ok, I agree clock input shematics haven't so much info on used components, and understand why you prefer have a photo.
(75 ohm switch and optional jumper)
On the other hand the output is a lot easier, you can omit the ferrite.
If world clock is enabeled with CS8411, Did you try to breadboard the output, just to test if another device can read this clock ?

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

My sampler is finally dead without any shine of resurrection as it seems. Hanging on boot for no apparent reason, no leds lit or nothing. Sooo, me I just abandoned the project finally. Wishing you the best but I'm not sure about this project anymore. The documentation just isn't enough.

oh bad news ! I don't have enough time right now, but i'll continue to post any info on this thread.
(there plenty of new PSU on ebay for E-mu ultra series)

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Hi, new kid here. I have been using two Ultras since a very long time, though less actively in recent years, plus I have a background in electronics engineering.

I recently found the time to finalize a long term project, to clone the DWAM 6862 board. Apparently, this idea has been discussed here as well, so I thought you might be interested. My board acts exactly as the original, as it is obviously based on the original schematics, but with my own PCB layout. I was not so much interested in the keyboard capabilities (although it's nice to be typing in sound names properly), but more in the digital audio and sync capabilities via word clock and the second MIDI port.

I have spare PCBs and parts so I can build one more if anyone's interested. I'm located in Germany.

I don't think the forum supports uploads, so you'll have to store them elsewhere and post links to them.

Nice job!  Is that white chip one of those H11L1 opto couplers?  I've just bought a few for one of my DIY projects.

Re: 6862 D-WAM ASCII Digital I/O

Just a quick shout-out to @ilmenator and his excellent D-WAM clone. Mine just arrived today, an easy install and an excellent fit in my E6400 Ultra -- it comes with the AES/EBU chip, a cable and mounting hardware,  As a bonus, it works!

I'm very pleased. My E6400 Ultra is now an E4XT (I also did a 128 voice upgrade, killing a Proteus 2000 in the process), and the price was absolutely reasonable.

Anyway, that's it. Thanks again.

Are the Ascii board clones still being made/sold? Was interested in one for my E5000 Ultra.

Yes, there is one guy in Germany who makes them. I believe the cost was 140 euro + shipping: https://www.dogsonacid.com/posts/12851074/

However, there is a cheaper option if you only need keyboard: https://rven.se/dwam-usb/
