New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Think its time to replace my old fan, does anyone have any ideas for a suitable replacement?  (the quieter the better. )

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

I saw that vid, and it looks super rad,  but I chickend out at the part where there is metal cutting and hole drilling. I'd love to just find a better quiter fan that would just be a swap out for the old one.

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Someone mentioned spraying WD40 under the bearing label, but not tried it myself yet.
**Update 26th Jan: Do not try this, WD40 is not suitable... see later posts.

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

yeah that's worth a try, the emu stock fan is a 40mm fan?

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

youre better off using silicone spray.  wd40 will dry it out.  the fan in the vid is super quiet btw.  i did that and cant hear it at all.  not to mention its not right next to the outer wall.

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Thanks a_b you're right - have just googled wd-40 vs silicone and it's definitely the wrong stuff so I'll edit my post! Will try silicone or maybe light machine oil as an experiment next time an emu is out of the rack - I've got a few and they're all noisy. Did the metal cutting fan mod on one but it was a lot of work so haven't tackled the others yet. I wasn't convinced the mod was worth it (in my case) - the fan was only quiet if the speed reducing resistor was in place, and then there was less airflow out the back than the stock fan. May just be paranoid as It still runs ok all day... just that nagging doubt.

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Thanks for your thoughts on the metal cutting, I am gonna keep it stock for now. I oiled up the fan, seems a little quiter I also have a scsi drive so its pretty loud all around.  It was pretty easy to do I just peeled back the sticker, and then you can see the bearing.

While I had the fan out I took note of the Fan info. (Pulled from a e6400 ultra)

I replaced the fan years ago in a couple of E5000s with a Scythe, 40x40x20mm. The kit comes with all the screws and pin adapters you need, if I recall, so no cutting of connectors is required, and certainly no cutting of the PSU cover!
It makes a lot of difference.

Also, just a few days ago I replaced the internal HD with a 2.5" laptop HD: now I can hardly hear the drive spin up. :-)
Another supposed advantage of a laptop drive is that it draws less current than a 3.5" drive. This means the PSU will last longer (allegedly).

Yep, that's the one.
Mounting the 2.5" drive is a bugger, however. I bought a "cradle" adapter, but it was no good, so the drive is hanging by a single mounting screw. Not ideal, but it weighs almost nothing, so I'll live with it for now.

Just had a look at the Youtube vid again, and I can't work out whether that huge fan is blowing hot air from the PSU into the sampler, or the other way around. Why didn't he mount it where the old fan was? That would have made more sense.

These 2.5" brackets fit with 2 bolts to the EMU chassis holes - scroll down to section 'Non-removable IDE discs'

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Thanks for that info, Phil, but I'm too lazy to try any more faffing: I've opened the E5K so many times over the years that I'm fed up with mods. I just want to USE it from now on. :-)

I tried the Wintech adapter (twice!) with a couple of SSDs, but never got it to work. That was about the time Emusonacid went to meet its maker, so I couldn't follow it up there.

Just realised from your blog that there's a read-only version of "Emus" here, which is nice to know!

Last summer I've changed the PSU fan for a silent one with the same dimensions as original. No need to abuse the case as in the vid above. It's been a pleasure to sit next to the silent E-MU since then. I did the SSD HD mod at the same time. Feels like real E-MU heaven.

Many thanks for posting the pics and info of that fan. It's about time I did mine... Damn the stock fan is noisy! I've already got a 128gb removable SSD (Stratos/Artmix) drive to kill the IDE noise. The fan mod would be incredible.

Cheers

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

Big thanks again to cube48. Bought and installed the NoiseBlocker XM1 fan. DEAD QUIET. Best $12 I've spent in a long time. I literally can't hear any fan noisy now.

I grabbed the xm1 fan but the clip is only 3 pin while there are 4 on the board of the 4xt. Does anyone know if I grabbed the wrong fan or if perhaps the 4xt pin layout is different?

Re: New fan for emu e6400 ultra

i received my xm-1 today, its much quite than the old one, so thats a relief... But the original is 40x40x20 instead of 10mm. Does that make a difference in cooling?

Is this the correct one?
The the watts differs instead of 0.6 watt its 0.36 watts.

and 0.03 amp

How many pins are in your machines? My e4xt has four while this fan only will accept 3.

Just from the back view, leave the first pin from the right. And the fan will do...

Do you have an image of yours? im just in doubt that min is 0,36 watts.
