Empty Sockets and adding PC AT Keyboard on E6400 Ultra

Postby donnw » Mon Aug 21, 2006 5:36 am

Greetings:

New E6400 Ultra owner - hoping someone can tell me:

1) What are the empty chip sockets on the main board for (not the memory slots)

2) How do you add the connection for an AT Keyboard to the E6400 Ultra - is it just a simple cable assembly that could be home brewed, or is there more to it?

3) Does anyone have a PDF of the service manual or at least a few key pages that might help with expaning the unit?

4) How do you expand the polyphony to 128? Is it something that can be 'home brewed' or does it take emu expansion card / proprietary chips / impossible to get expansion kit / or ???

Thanks much!

1 & 4. The three empty sockets (two recessed-square ones and one with lots of holes) are for the two additional voice DSPs and a CPU that make up the 128-voice polyphony expansion. These are custom E-mu chips and impossible to find on their own now. You're better off buying an already expanded E-mu (for example, E4XT Ultras had 128 voices installed at the factory).

The PCI-style slot is for the RFX32 expansion card.

2. Attaching a PC/AT keyboard requires the D/WAM board that screws into the back of the unit where all the blanked socket holes are. It attaches to the motherboard via a ribbon cable and it is a custom E-mu board, so unfortunately you cannot make a "homebrew" keyboard cable.

3. Look in http://www.ezman.ukfsn.org/downloads.htm in the Manuals section.

if you want to use a keyboard (and you are using a pc) you can download E-Remote

this works over midi - thru your soundcard and allows you to use your pc keyboard as if it were plugged in the back of the emu
