HardDrives and startup current.. watchyou don't fry your PSU

Postby space echo » Wed Oct 03, 2007 8:30 am

Hi all,

i've read a few posts that mention members having put 60gb hard drives in their emus - an i remembered something that might be worth checking:

From memory the maximum start up current the EMU can provide to a hard drive is 2.1amps or 1.7 amps (cant remember)

what you will find is that most of the newer 7200 rpm drives exceed this.

I guess that it wont really fry a power supply the first time or maybe even never, but it is something to consider when u have added extra options...

in the end i found some nice quiet 5400 30gb drives that have a 1.7a startup current..

Or, you could install a separate power supply that powers just the hard drive. That will let you use any drive you want.

Some of us need to have access to the hard drive over the SCSI bus. If you use a large IDE drive, you have to take it out of the E-mu every time you want to back up its contents - not fun. Here's a solution to this particular issue:

You can use a quiet IDE drive and still have access to it over the SCSI bus.

I use Samsung 120G IDE 2.5" PATA drives - about $60 now.

Samsung SpinPoint 120GB SATA/150 5400RPM 8MB 2.5-Inch Notebook Hard Drive

e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SpinPoint ... 612&sr=8-1

I used a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE adapter

Like this: (they are cheaper on ebay)

http://www.amazon.com/QVS-CC2200-2-5-Dr ... 697&sr=8-1

Works like a charm.

I used 2" Velcro to mount the drive without screws - just use sticky back velcro similar to this kind of stuff:

http://www.amazon.com/Lumiquest-Velcro- ... 851&sr=1-9

I mounted mine on the back of the existing drive (which is no longer powered or connected, but still in place).

I have it ! ( After a long night backing up 9 external SCSI Harddisk + CDs )

After installing the new internal Disk, it seems to be that the Scsi Bus can only mount one Disk at the time. Don?t know .
Anyway , all Disks and Cd-Rom are now on One disk , what a wonderful workflow!

Thanks for support an PM`s here !

Michael

By the Way , i bought a Western Digital 80GB. There was also a 160GB only for a view Euros more.? Don?t know . Perhaps for my second Emu. Anybody expierience ?, Where is the Limit ?

Check your SCSI IDs on each device, they should be different. Each device on the SCSI chain will show up as a separate device in the EMU. If you have them showing up as one, your IDs are set wrong and you're asking for your data to get corrupted.
