Hi there,
I'm quite new to EMU Samplers and received my ULTRA XT just a
few weeks ago, while having a lot of modification/optmization ideas
long before buying it.

So far:

- RFX is running stable, without noise bursts, using 4.7
(with that small power supply)

- changed the harddrive to 2,5" Samsung

- changed the fan to a silenx model
(this one is unfortunately not that much more silent than the original fan!)

- using an SCSI-->IDE-->CF adapter (makes sample swapping so easy!)

But the best of all "mod" is to use a programmable cashiers keyboard.
I bought a used PREH Commander M128WX, plugging it into the
ASCII-Slot on the back of the XT.

You may know that all front panel actions can be carried out with a
normal ASCII-keyboard, but with the PREH-kyboard, you can go
far beyond:

Imagine to press only one key to carry out the following operation:
Master, FX, RSetup, ..., ..., ...

The XT is getting so transparent now. Watch out for programmable
keyboards! And the best: It looks much cooler than the standard
keyboard, because it's in that matrix style.

Allright, you win the Sequential "Prophet 3000" award for coolest sampler interface (a really easy to use sampler)

Reminds me of how easy those Prophet 3000s were to use back in the day. Rack mount with a simple handheld interface about the size of a small envelope attached by an extending cord. Unfortunately Sequential sold only a handful before they shut down.

Good on E-mu to make a hardware platform (the E4) that's versatile.

How do you program the PREH Commander M128WX keybord? Do you mean you can access any of the functions of the sampler with one key?
(Sounds really good when SoundDiver doesn't support RFX32.)

BTW, I also got the older, smaller power supply type in my E4; so you mean we can install RFX32 without any modifications?

About programming of the PREH M128WX:

Some background info:
This model isn't produced any more and unfortunately, the newest PC
or Mac software version isn't compatible with the older version.
But I made a simple DOS bootdisk under XP for running that old
DOS editor software. After some programming, you can really quickly
assign the keys you want them to be.

Can you access any EMU page with a press of one PREH key?
Yes, nearby, you can program a "string" of up to 120 characters.
Since you can steer your EMU totally with the cursor-, the F- and
some special keys on a standard AT-keyboard, you can use the PREH
to carry out multiple key presses in one sequence. For example, a key
to get into the edit level of the RFX-Setup could be programmed like this:

{Alt+M},{F4},{F6},{F6}

Master --> FX --> RSetup --> Edit

I bought my EMU only some weeks ago and RFX is running fine
so far, having that older PowDec 43W power supply installed inside
the E4. I think I will use this combination until the ps blows up. I will
then select an appropriate ps.

With a little bit of trickery, I'm thinking you could do this:


USB to Ps/2

Software emulation of a keyboard on the pc, sending macros ("strings") to the emu.

So, like eoslink etc, but using keystrokes sent via USB to the XT/Ultra etc.

Not quite as nice as the commander, but may even be possible with off the shelf freeware.

Think macros on PC or mac sending keystrokes to emu via keyboard interface.

This should be possible as the keyboard interface is the PS/2 style no? Ie I2C serial interface to a well known spec.

thats really nice info on the possibilities here. Perhaps there might exist a smaller programmable keyboard, i.e. 25 keys that would just fit the need in terms of number of keys :-)
