Yes.

I used one of these CF-IDE-adapter and tried to connect it directly to the internal IDE-Bus of my Ultra-sampler.
My CF-Card (I checked it with a SANDISC 256MB CF-Card) was not recognized. Maybe it was too old.

I did not check it. but I think that the CF-IDE-Bridge can be used connected directly to the internal IDE-bus of the Ultra with CF-cards that are setup as FIXED DISC.
I read that all CF-Cards from Kingston & Transcend are switching automaticly from Removable Disc to Fixed Disc, if necessary.
SANDISC-cards can be switched from "Removable" to "Fixed" using a software-tool. Just check via search-engine.

One think that definetly works is, if you connect the CF-IDE-adapter to the SCSI-bus via a IDE-SCSI-Bridge-adapter.
I used an Acard AEC-7720U and could successfully access the CF-Card.
I could format it with EOS-FAT & with FAT16/FAT32.
I also could save & load files from the CF-card.

The following Bridge-adapters should work with any CF-IDE-adapter:
- Acard AEC-7720U (suitable for a 5.25"-drivebay)
- Acard ARS-2000U (the only 3.5"-version)
- Bridge adapter from Glyph
- I-O Data Device Inc. (offered on ebay by the user "finestcomputers" from Hungary for AMIGA-users to connect a CF-IDE-adapter to an AMIGA-SCSI-interface)

There is also a japanese guy with the ebay-username "artmix" who, from time to time, offers a CF-Card to SCSI-adapter in 2.5"-format under the name POWERMONSTER. Direct website: http://www.artmix.com (all in japanese).

Of course: This solution does not support hot-swap of the media.
I think it would be better to use an external case for he CF-Card so that you can power-off the device, remove the CF-Card and put it into your computer, exchange data, put it back again into the SCSI-CF-Reader and power the external drive on again.

Just a note on the delay in boot caused by disconnecting the floppy drive to mount a CF drive in place of the floppy drive.

kalide wrote:Ground the ready line (or pull it down to 0V) to make the Emu think it has a floppy installed.

i.e. a jumper across pin 34 (RDY) and Pin 33 (GND) on the Floppy 34 pin header.

No delays at startup.

Anyone have any schematics of the motherboard to confirm the need for a pull down resistor?

M

This works in removing the delay. The pin-out of the motherboard floppy port can be found here:

http://pinouts.ru/Storage/InternalDisk_pinout.shtml

Install a jumper between the two pins (33 and 34) on the "Data" conncetor (CN28 on a E4XT Ultra motherboard) that are futhest from the front panel.

Problem solved.

I saw that SCSIforSamplers lowerd the shippnig cost and the prices for the CF-reader.
In Germany there is no such shop.
If you get the components here, you pay more as at SCSIforSamplers including shipping.
Actual price at SfS: US $105 for the Cardreader, US $38 for shipping to Europe = US $143. That's approx 105 EUR plus customs.

The Acard AEC-7720U (5.25"-form factor) you can purchase at http://www.vesalia.de for round about 100 EUR plus shipping.
A CF-Cardreader to IDE with 3.5"-floppy drive form factor you get at http://www.Conrad.de for round about 20 EUR.

Thanks to this thread I ended up getting a CF card reader for my ESI 4000. Although the biggest card I can use is only 2gb(has anyone used bigger cards on the ESi?) the joy of having a reliable silent way of saving is a strange luxury. After messing around with my sampler for 10 years now it is just strange to load and save banks in absolute silence. I dont think Ill miss the crunching of zipdisks and how they would just give up every now and again. Its nice to finally "catch up" with technology on the old beast. Anyhow I would recommend this for any Emu user thinking of a getting a storage device.

So hot-swapping of CF Cards is not available on either the internal SCSI bus or the IDE bus? On the external SCSI can a device be powered down and back up while the sampler is still running without damage or corruption?

I did this all the time with my external hardrive as it sounded like an airport in a megaphone factory while it was powered up. I never had any problems from this bad practice but I dont want to risk it with the CF card reader. According to the scsi4samplers website it should not be done as it leads to damage to the sampler. Id be interested to know if anyone has tried it yet

I have had a problem with my CF-card reader from SCSIforSAMPLERS ..

I am using EOS 4.70
I can transfer and load files from my computer no problem.. but I cannot save - every time it gets stuck when I try and save, it just hangs. I was gonna try another SCSI cable, could it also be a problem with EOS 4.70?

Thanks

Anybody knows a good place, where i can buy cheap SCSI-to-IDE adapter or a SCSI CF-Card reader for the EMU? (Maybe a SCSI-to-SATA adapter?) Prefer an EU source....
Thanks,
thomas
