Hey Guys

I'm new here and got myself an Emu E4x last week and after playing around with it, there are some questions i got for you guys:

1 Model Questions:
- I got the E4x (not Ultra ... or at least not labeld "ultra" on the front). But am i right, that it can be upgraded to an E4xT Ultra ? If yes how ?
- Currently got EOS Version 3.0 installed (or even lower), is it True, that "classical" models only support EOS until 4.62 and that there is no beatmunging ? (why ? cause i thought that the ultra is just a hardware upgrade nothing more ...)
- Where is the E4x in the Product line ? :) I'm a little confused. Is it: E6400 Ultra, E4X then E4xT Ultra or is the E4X "lower" then the e6400 ultra ? What exactly are the differences ?
- How do i get Info's like Diskspace, Memory and Stuff like that ? (cause i think the guy who had it before me, upgraded it, so i want to check if i got a e4xt ultra in the case of an e4x. is that even possible ? :) )

2 General Questions:
- Does the Emu support synced modulations ? For ex: If i have an LFO Modulating, is it possible to set it to something like 1/4 or 1/8th ? Because right now i can't do that. And it would be very usefull sometimes. Or is this just cause i got an old eos ?

- Can i get the original EMU Banks somewhere or has someone some good links ? (my device is basically empty and i would love to get the sounds from the time, the emu was made). Any good Banks that you know ?


Well hope to get some help here. But i realy like the device so for. Even if this is just the beginning :)

There are direkt a Musical Modulator like 1/4 1/8 in the Patch Chord. Just can send them via the Lag Prozessor to get a LFO.

Thx for the answer. So i already see the first thing i don't have on my eos now (think it's 2.8). So this means after upgrading there should be something like "1/4" in the chords page which i can then route an lfo of my choice ? Or let's rather say i would have to route like this:

ex: 1/4 --> lag processor --> lfo right ?

So what i found out so far:

- The E4X has a different Prozessor then the Ultra series installed
- Highest available EOS Version for the E4X is 4.62; Looks like it's not possible to get 4.7 running on the E4X

So my first questions are more or less answered. But there is still a thing that i would like to have an expert helping:

- What exact features am i missing with my emu ?
I assume, that i won't have beatmungler at all (is there really no way, to get this onto an E4X ?). Of course i won't have all the RFX stuff but this is because of the board.

So detailed: Do i realy just miss the beatmungler or is there more stuff that i will be missing ?

As far as i see it, there is no real way to "upgrade" my e4x to an e4xt ultra right ? I mean i would need a new processor and i think they are quite hard to get and even then, i'm not sure if it will work at all. But maybee you guys know more on this. If i'm just missing the beatmungler (or if there's a way to get it) i'm happy. But if i would have a lot of other real GREAT stuff missing i would love to upgrade if possible.

There are two different E4 sampler lines of three different hardware revisions/generations:
The E4 Classic line contains E4 samplers of the 1st and 2nd generations while the E4 Ultra samplers are of the 3rd generation.
The 1st generation included the e64 and the E IV which used 30-pin SIMMs with RAM capacities of maximum 16MB per SIMM. The e64 had 4 SIMM sockets for max. RAM of 64MB while the EIV had 8 SIMM sockets for max. RAM of 128MB.
The 2nd generation used 72-pin PS/2 SIMMs for RAM expansion with a RAM capacity of max. 64MB per SIMM.

The E4X is part of the 2nd generation and its position is between E-Synth and E4X Turbo.
Standard Specifications are:
- e6400: 64 Voices, 8 balanced analog Outs, 1MB Flash Boot RAM, 1 internal & 1 external SCSI port
- E-Synth: same as e6400, PLUS AES/EBU I/O, ASCII Interface, 18bit Dual FX-Processor, 16MB Sound ROM and E-Synth Front Panel
- E4X: same as e6400, PLUS AES/EBU I/O, ASCII Interface, 18bit Dual FX-Processor, internal 540MB SCSI Hard Disc
- E4XT: same as E4X, PLUS 64 polyphony Upgrade (128 Voices) and a larger internal 1GB SCSI Hard Disc

Right now I don't know if the E4X, the E-Synth or E4X Turbo had been equipped with the 2nd MIDI I/O expansion from factory side.

10 years ago there had been an Upgrade Kit for the E4 Classic line to the Ultras (replacement of the mainboard or so). But today this upgrade Kit is not available any more.
Beat-Munging is only available with the Ultras as they are using a ColdFire CPU with more processing power, required for this realtime function. Non-Ultras does not have enough processing power for Beat-Munging in realtime so that it is not implemented in EOS Classic.

The advantages of the 3rd generation hardware are:
- more CPU processing power
- larger CPU FLASH Memory for larger EOS (-> space for implementation of support of FAT as filesystem)
- Internal IDE bus
- PCI-like expansion bus for the RFX-32 expansion and its accessories
- Ability to act as a SLAVE in the Digital Domain (sync to external clock signal of AES/EBU, S/P-DIF, ADAT or Word Clock)

Regarding your other questions just visit ...
- Master ... for general information about memory usage
- Master -> Util -> About -> Config ... for information about installed RAM, CPU FLASH, Preset RAM and Options
- Disk/Browse ... select the Hard Disk and hit INFO

Thx a lot for the hints mosrob. Didn't have the time to check out my actual hardware configuration. But some days ago i could flash eos 4.62 without a problem (nice new lfo waves ).

Don't get this. You want to say, that i can't sync my EMU for ex to logic as master over midi ????

And something regarding the beatmunger. It's actually something similar the Recycle right ? Auto-Chop and then stretch, but there is no change in pitch right ?
Do you use it ? (can imagine to layer some breaks and add / remove individual hit's ) would be very nice. Does it map individual slices to individual voices or key's if required ? Or do you have to do this manually ?

All EMUs can be synchronized to external MIDI-clock.

I was talking about digital audio.
Here is an excerpt taken from the installation manual of the Model 6861 ADAT Interface, page 10:
Clock
ADAT Optical can be used as a Word Clock source on the Ultra series. In a digital audio system, there must be only one Master Clock. For example, when recording into an ADAT you must switch the ADAT to receive external clock OR connect another lightpipe from the ADAT out to Ultra and set Ultra’s Word Clock In (Master, Setup, In/Out) to ADAT.
The master clock in a digital system depends on your setup. All Emulator models have an extremely stable clock source and can be confidently used as a Master Clock.
An Ultra can be either a master or slave. Older Emulators MUST be the master in an ADAT setup as they cannot synchronize to an external Word Clock.

aha think now i get it.

Was not sure about your statement, because i don't use any ADAT stuff at all. I even don't know the technology behind it.

So in non Ultra's connected over Midi to the Computer, it's no prob to have Logic as the master ? (regarding tempo for example ) ?
Let's say i have a logic project with 170 bpm and a lfo modulating something with 1/4 then it will be synced to the 170 bpm coming from logic ?

It would only be a Problem if i would use one of the technologies you mentioned right ?
