Ultras' power supply specs

Postby dogcow » Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:38 pm

My EMU 6400 has been waiting for a replacement power supply since september. That's 6 months now. The reason is that the power supply is too weak to supply for the RFX, adats and extra inputs. Apparently its one of the older models that were all shipped with weak PSUs.

Now, I have contacted EMU and the service (EMU authorised service) has also contacted EMU but they still have not received a definitive reply. They may be getting a few PSU's or not but even if they do it doesn't mean that my machine will receive one. Now that EMU has been bought by Creative I really don't think they'll be making any PSU's for the hardware samplers.

So, as you can imagine I'm fairly desperate. I wanted to ask you guys if anyone knows what the specs for the PSU are and if you could post them here. I figurd its just a power supply, it can't be that difficult to buy one with the same specs? I don't know. Its just the only other solution I can think of.

Can someone help please or has any other ideas?

Hi,

I can imagine this is bothering you.

You probably know that the internal HD is a regular PC harddrive, this means that there is at least 5V coming from the PSU (just like in a PC), this could also be the case with the fan, but that I have to mesure myself yet.

I would consider taking a multimeter, or ask someone with electronic knowledge, to do so (or you might frie something), and see how much juice the original PSU delivers. It will be of more importance to determine how high the voltages are rather then how much amp?res you get, since may PSUs (like the ones in PCs, deliver enough amp?res anyway).

Since you don't mention if you have your Emu still with you, this might be difficult if it's with Emu allready.

I'll see if I can get some more details on this (dunno when, maybe this weekend)

cheers

Yeah, I forgot to mention that my sampler is with the EMU service in Germany. I don't really know anyone with the tools or the knowledge to measure the voltage on the PSU even if it was here so it doesn't really make a difference.

Another thing is, even if I could find someone to measure it I don't really know by how much the voltage should be increased to be enough for my setup. I can't just use the same sort of PSU since the one thats inside is obviously too weak. It also crossed my mind that even if I get a PSU with the right voltage the connectors are likely to be different then whats needed for the EMU so I still might not be able to use it.

I don't know. It doesn't look like this is going to work anyhow. I was also thinking of buying another EMU (a newer one) and moving all of the options I bought into it. From what I understand the newer models have PSUs that can drive all of the extra hardware. And then maybe just sell the old one since it works fine on its own.

So, I guess I have a different question now. Does anyone maybe know how I can tell if its one of the old or the new models? Obviously, I don't want to buy another sampler just to be stuck with the same problem as before.

Thanks for your help roonsmits :)

So, I emailed the info to the EMU service center in Germany. They emailed me back and said they forwarded the info to EMU and are waiting for a reply from them to see if the PSU is indeed the proper one. I figured, great, not like EMU is ever going to respond to them anyway. So, today I decided to phone them and see what is going on and amazingly not only has EMU responded and said that those PSUs are fitting for ultras they also have no lack of power supplies anymore. It seems EMU has ordered a whole bunch and decided to send them off to service centers.

None of this means anything of course until I actually confirm that they received them but it sure sounds way more promising then what I've been told until now.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but it seems like that bit of info from art made all the difference. So, yeah, thanks again art. I'm really curious now what way is this going to work out in the end.

Hi,
I still have three questions:

- Is there a way to determine if you've an E6400 Ultra with a "weak" PSU? Maybe by serial number ranges?
[solved] It seems a serial starting with "0901" solves any issues. A pitty, that I got an older unit

- How do you find out your PSU is too weak? Sound? Crashes?

- When are the "weak" PSUs too weak? Only when you fit all extensions or even just the RFX-32 board?

Thanks

I'd just like to post what actually happened in the end.

Of course, EMU never shipped any PSUs and I ended up ordering one from USA which really cost me a LOT (around 140 eur all in all) and I just switched it myself. But, at least, the sampler works fine now which makes it worth it after all.

I wonder how much they'll charge for it:
http://www.elektrosil.com/Stromversorgu ... duct13.htm

At least it's a european reseller...

@dogcow: can you shed some light on my last two questions please?

The following is the official word from E-MU. I had this performed a few years ago.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All E4 Ultras (E-5000s and E-6400s as well) with serial numbers that start with build dates including and later than 0901 (09=September, 01=2001) have the newer power supply and do not need to be upgraded. You may disregard this letter if your sampler falls in this serial range.

Thanks!
So I guess it doesn't make sense to at least try it, right? Can something be damaged doing so...?
