I've only been able to copy from one disk to another using the Backup command. This is a really awkward way to do it if you're just trying to copy one folder from a large hard drive to a relatively small ZIP disk. So, how do you do it?

With the EOS, I don't think there IS any copy command. You're pretty much stuck with either backing up the whole drive, or loading and saving a bank at a time to a new destination.

It's a pain in the ass.

Oh yeah. I believe there is some sort of copy function in that eos software thingy, whatsitscalledagain.

You mean like a front-end for my PC? I'd wondered about that. But I thought it couldn't read the drives formatted with the EOS file system? Also, I'm having the damndest time getting my e6400 to talk with my SCSI card. I'm starting to think there's something wrong with it (my SCSI card, I mean).

Really? That's all I thought it was, a sample translator. It actually lets you manipulate EOS formatted drives?

Yeah Translator's a great idea... too bad they can't get the f-ing thing to actually translate EOS files

I think it can only talk to your computer via SCSI card if your EOS drive's formatted in FAT-32. As far as translating samples on my PC to EOS, that's been a headache...

Back to the original topic, I've got a solution (and I'm actually embarrassed to say, I found it in the manual... d'oh!)

Select "Range" for the back-up type in stead of "All". This automatically restricts the back-up to a single folder, and lets you specify a range of banks within the folder to copy (or all banks in the folder).

Yes, it's on page 375 of the EOS 4.0 manual. Hidden away in the "Disk Menu" chapter, item 8 in the description of the "Backup" utility command.

Wouldn't it be great if the manual had an chapter called "how to do simple things you're probably going to want at some point", instead of making us read it cover to cover to find the useful bits.

Yeah, it works! It's still more awkward than it should be in my head (it feels more like a cheap work-around than a real solution), but it works, so I'm happy. It means I actually can get some use out of this stupid JAZ drive I had to buy to read all the samples my machine came with after all.
