I recently installed an IDE Hard drive I bought ages ago as a kit with instructions from EMu...

Its been working fine till now. It doesnt seem to recognize it, and spazzes out when I'm in the Disk/Browse menu (I also have a CF reader with probs!)
It says something like "Not a DOS disk:pc_dskinit" and hangs for a bit... seems to come back after a while though.

It could be a dodgy hard drive..

Any suggestions would be much appreciated !

replace with a nice silent 2.5" IDE drive like a Samsung 120G and use EOS 4.7...

I just wanted to warn people ( correct me if you know otherwise ) that the predominantly Kingspec branded 'PATA' SSD IDE drives don't seem to work with EOS E4XT 4.7 and I suppose all models. In my test one of these dirves is not seen. After a little digging it turns out these are actually drives with a SATA controller and then SATA <-> PATA/IDE converter chip, the controller chip and the converter are both from the brand JMicron and apparently not so great... I just swapped out for an existing IDE drive, I've checked all power connections with a meter and pin connectivity through the 40 <-> 44 pin converter and power lead and everything measure correctly but there's no drive mount. I'm tempted to try another SSD from a different brand ( Transcend or ? ) only if they are 'True' PATA/IDE. I am wondering if anyone else has been down this route with success? In the meantime I'll try one of laptop drives as recommended above. Has anyone got a recommendation of a removeable dock for easy backing up?

I have the same problem, but I tried one of these: InnoDisk FiD2.5” ATA6000
I had high hopes as the literature claimed that the drive was fully IDE compatible and E-mu stated that the IDE drive must be ATA3 or higher, so I was hopeful.
The block diagram of this drive shows an IDE controller on board, and I think the problem you were having is that ATA7 is pretty much a SATA drive with a fudge.

I got a bit further with it than you did with the Kingspec - my E5000 booted up normally and the drive screen showed the drive but, it was asleep.
Tried to do a format and got an error. Once you highlight the drive and hit the info button it shows the usual screen with mostly "????" in the specs and then the drive will disappear when you OK out of that screen.

Real shame, I would love a totally silent IDE flash drive in my Ultra! I guess I'm just going to have to get a laptop IDE hard drive of some sort.

Here's what happens when I try to do stuff with the FiD SSD:


This is what shows in the Disk menu after the Ultra has booted up (the FiD SSD appears to be asleep and can't be woken up).


This is when I hit "Format".


Then when pressing "Enter" to go ahead with formatting I get this.


Then using the "Info" command shows this.

After using "Info" when I press "Ok" the floppy buzzes and the FiD SSD drive disappears.

It seems like its close to working - at least the Ultra appears to know what the drive is.
I will try taking the drive out and formatting it with FAT32 on a PC. Just got to wait until I can take
it round to my brother's place (he has a PC).

Well ok, here we go - I have an SSD working in my e5000 Ultra!
It is a Sandisk SSD (Formerly FFD) Ultra ATA 2.5

I'm still in the testing phase at the moment, so can't give a guarantee yet, but when I can I'll give you the source for these drives as well.
Only one problem - the guy only has 16Gb drives.

I never did get the FiD drive to work no matter what I did to it, although maybe I should have put an E-mu bank on it then put it in the Ultra,
might have to try that at some point.

Any more news on this, E5kultra? I'd love to install an SSD in my E5000, as the HD is now noisier than the Scythe fan that I installed. :-)
