Whiney Hard Drives ... AAAAAGH !

Postby honest bob II » Fri Jun 18, 2004 11:09 am

Good morning ,
i've got a 20gig Quantum Fireball ict1520 inside my newly aquired platinum and it's unbearably noisey , does anyone else have this problem ?
If not i'd be interested to see what hd you're using .
I checked emu.com and it lists these (20gb) drives as approved :

IBM 07N3924 20.0 GB
Hard Drive Quantum QML20000LC-A 20.0 GB
Hard Drive Quantum QML20000LD-A 20.0 GB
Hard Drive Quantum QMP20500LM-A 20.0 GB

I think i'm going mad .
thanks .

there is a bit of noise but sounds like mostly the fan on mine. i use a Seagate Medalist U6 40.8gb, Model Number ST340810A.

not sure if you already know this but...hit the disk button, then info for the desires drive, and you can put the drive to sleep... no more whinning!!
then when you go to save again it will wake itself. i've got an older 10 gig IBM Deskstar 10000 rpm...it squeels when its on.
hope this helps

cheers ez man/cm_locuss ... yeah , i was aware of the sleep mode , would rather sort it out first though mate ;)
Is that a 7200rpm drive ez ?
I'll open mine up and check out if the offender is indeed the hd or the fan .
Still interested to know the variety of drives being used out there ... who's got the biggest etc

hmm... if u sleep the drive as suggested and the noise go's away its the drive

tbh honest its probably both.

any suggestions for quiet replacement fans?

Never tried this myself but sum computer shop cowboy geezer I know, squirts furniture polish into noisy fan bearings to shut the muthas up.... well u know :???:

Large hard drive = small penis :finger:

I only use my floppy... doh

easy now

my hd is 5400rpm (silverman: don't know if that holds any secrets about me). It does the trick for me, is plenty fast enuff for loading samples into ram.

I know what u mean, it's one of those things I miss 'bout my esi-32.

Most modern Ide drives should be fairly quiet and I believe theres quite a few companies that sell quiet replacement fans.

Neeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiighhhhhhh
Thrruuuuuuuuuuummmmeeeee...

eh!

ps: sticking it in a rack helps a bit

 I have the same problem!

the noise it outrageously loud, like im on HMS invincible watching harrier jump jets take off. using the sleep function doesnt help things cos it needs to access the HD quite frequently ARGH!
