Ive just got an external cd drive and connected it to my EMU via SCSI

Ive powered up the drive and put an emu disc inside, then powered up the EMU

The problem is that the EMU doesnt mount the cd drive.. all i see are the Hard drive and floppy drive

I dont know much about SCSI so have i missed something?

Did you ensure that its SCSI ID is set to something different from 0 or 1? Mine's set to 2 and it works fine.

The drive has a number switch on the back, i assume thats the SCSI ID number?
Ive tried booting up the EMU with the drive set to all numbers so far

But then inside the EMU there is the SCSI / DISK screen which is set to...

SCSI ID - 6
SCSI Termination - On
Disk Button goes to - Last
Avoid Host on ID - None
Drive Saver - 10 Minutes

Am i right in thinking all that is for the internal hard drive though?

Ive now found that if i set the cd drive to ID 3, when the EMU boots up it just hangs saying "mounting SCSI drive 0"

anyone know what this could mean?

Now, there might be a problem with your SCSI cable. Do you have another one?

P.S.: My E4K (v. 3.00b) is set up as follows, if that's any help:

SCSI ID: 4
Termination: On
Mac on SCSI bus: No
SGI on SCSI bus: No
Disk button goes to: Last

External HD: set to ID 0
External CD-ROM: set to ID 3 (not 2 as I originally claimed)
Internal HD: set to ID 1 (fixed)

I dont have another cable to try but i'll try and find one from somewhere..

This one i got with the drive has adapters on each end to make it the bigger sized SCSI plug, so that could be causing the problem

Is the CD drive terminated - usually there's a switch on the drive to switch termination on or off. How is your SCSI chain? If you have the CD-drive after the hard drive in the chain, and termination is set to 'on' for the hard drive, then your SCSI chain won't see the CD-drive.
Try the chain like this:

Emu (leave the termination as it is)
to
Hard drive (termination off)
to
CD-drive (termination on)

Make sure all your devices have different SCSI ID numbers, and as gcoudert said, make sure you cables are all sound.

thanks for the reply ive got a good idea how its supposed to work now

But how do i know what the hard drives ID number is? and same for Termination on\off?
Am I going to have to open up the EMU to find out?

Sorry, I assumed you had an external hard drive, but obviously it's an internal one. Just check the termination is on for the CD-ROM drive, and that it has a different SCSI ID number to the Emu and the internal drive.

Ive found that both these internal drives are on ids


8 - Internal Hard Drive
9 - Floppy Drive


No idea how these are terminated


Ive tried termination both on and off using the external drive and also all IDs 0-6 - it doesnt go any higher

You don't need to worry about internal devices. Your external CD-ROM player must be "terminated" as it is on the end of the SCSI chain. Since you have tried that already, I guess your cable/adapter/player is at fault.

Whereabouts in the UK are you? If you're anywhere near the Luton area, you're welcome to try my CD-ROM player.

At least now i can be sure its the drive or cable.. pretty sure it'll be the cable now thinking about it

Just thought i'd reply to this so that anyone else having the same problem can make use of it

It was the SCSI cable after all

Bought a new cable, connected my cd drive and booted up the EMU...it mounted first time and works perfectly!
