have you previously tested the drives and ascertained whether or not they work before you tried to put them in the ultra?
As you say it might be the drive.
Is the connector on the hard drive for the laptop connector not keyed? I dont have one in front of me right now so I cant remember off the top of the head. Refer to the instructions for the adaptor as to which is which, as it will only work one way round.
Does the drive fit under the start up power specs of the ultra? have you got the correct cable wired for the power? the positions of the 5v line and the 12v line on the ultra motherboard are reversed compared to normal molex connections.
What do you know and what have you tried so far?
As far as I am aware, all 2.5 drives do have 44 pin connectors, if they are IDE ATA drives.
I don't think you will be able to use two drives on the IDE bus in the Ultra, I think in order to have two drives you have to use a scsi to ide adaptor and use the scsi port as well. (although I'm not sure)
Again it might be the drives are just too new an ATA spec to work with the Ultra.
