A bunch of SCSI to IDE adapters - for old non ultras

...lots on ebay for $29. I have nothing to do with this merchant, but if you have an older sampler and want to e.g. use a silent laptop drive in a SCSI based sampler, this is a nice way to do it:

I've just installed the ACARD 7720U SCSI-IDE
adapter in the ULTRA and it works flawlessly with a further
IDE-CF adapter.

Now swapping WAV samples via CF to and from any other external device, in my case the AKAI MPC2500, is so easy. YES!

By the way, 29$ is really cheap. I got mine for 70$.

TSR, I'm interested in using an IDE-CF adapter as well..

Just wondering if it would be possible to use this adapter directly with the IDE connector in the Ultra instead of working with the scsi bus. Have you tried this? thanks!

One consideration is that the IDE spec used by the IDE bus in the ultra doesn't support removable media (ie ATAPI) such as zips or the like.

The SCSI-IDE adaptors by Acard Get around this issue by handling the ATAPI device themselves, and just presenting a simple scsi device to the sampler, which it knows how to handle.
From what I've read this is really the only way to integrate the two short of getting an actual scsi cf reader.

Ok so I just picked up two Acard adaptors, specifically the models AEC-7720U and 7720UW for IDE to SCSI narrow and IDE to SCSI UltraWide respectively.

A heads up is that if you opt to get the 7720U, you will not be able to mount the drive on the mounting holes in the EIV range. This is because the adaptor card itself, is wider than the drive is, and the space to put the drive is just wide enough for the drive. In one orientation you would have to make a hole in the floor of the sampler case and in the other you would have to make a hole in the outer case, as it would extend beyond them.

My solution to the problem was to create a new mounting bay for drives attached to the outer black skin of the unit. So that it hangs down in the main space in the sampler. This seems to work and has the advantage of housing the drive horizontally.

The 7720UW is a much smaller board, fitting in exactly the space available at the end of the drive. Saying that it is still a pain to fit this board in an akai s5000, but it does at least fit after much rejigging of cables.

edit: further information is that the 7720U does not support 2.5 ide drives, and connecting one and trying anyway will give you a scsi error when trying to format. And it looks like the UW doesnt either according to the box, with only the 2000LHS/HU/HW being the ones with active support.
