can't upgrade my E5000 ultra to EOS 4.7 !!!!

Postby abducted » Fri Aug 01, 2008 11:23 am

Hi !
I have an E5000 ultra with eos 4.01.
Ii'd like to upgrade to 4.7 but there is a problem.
I followed the instructions and created a flashprep disk and a eos 4.7 disk.
But when I insert the flashprep disk and turn on the e-mu, nothing happens ! It boots as usual. It doesn't care about the flashprep disk.
Help me please!

Common problems:

Floppy disk not actually working i.e. not doing a proper read

Floppy disk was formatted on a PC or Mac- Try formatting it on the EMU you are going to load it on. If that doesn't work try

Using an old floppy that's actually bad - this happened to me - same symptom

are you holding down the Enter key after the floppy boots? Sometimes the contrast in the display is set to very poor contrast, so you can barely see the question and the floppy just spins, LED on etc.....

1. Download EOS 4.7 from the E-MU web site (www.emu.com).
2. Copy the software to a DOS formatted 3.5? floppy disk.
3. Insert the EOS 4.7 software disk and turn power on. The display asks,
?Update FLASH from floppy??
4. Press Enter. The display reads, ?Loading OS?? This takes a minute or
two.
5. The display then asks, ?Burn to flash?? Press Enter.
6. A few seconds later the Emulator will boot normally.
7. Power off the Emulator and re-boot.

I tried on different floppies....
Formatted on PC or E-mu. This is driving me crazy.
And I've also made a copy of the current
EOS 4.01 to a floppy, just in case...
And when I try to boot with this floppy I get
the message "do you want to upgrade?"etc...
So it works !
But why does it work only with this floppy?
From what I understand in oder to upgrade
from 4.01 to 4.7, you have to make 2 floppies.
One with flashprep and one with EOS 4.7.
Flashprep is a program that will let the e-mu
uncompress the EOS 4.7 data on the second floppy.
But this doesn't work !!! The e-mu ignores any floppy
I put in it except the one with the 4.01 backup I made.
I've even downloaded the disk image of EOS 4.6
and guess what... It doesn't work !!!!!
By the way I had a lot of trouble putting this image
to disk because it was compressed with stuffit,
a mac archiving program !!!

Search the forum for flashprep - there's lots of comments on this kind of issue. I still suspect your floppy disk formatting could be the issue - the Emu is VERY sensitive to the drive format - for example, there are reported cases of floppies not working when formatted by WinXP so you have to resort to DOS booting, or a DOS Window (Cmd.exe, then format using a full, not quick format).

I'll second what kalide said there. The floppies are best formatted in a DOS prompt, before the disk expander tool that writes the flashprep disk is launched from the same DOS prompt.
