Emu Sampler ppl beware!

Postby Navjot Singh » Sat Feb 07, 2009 3:10 am

the most wierdest thing happend to my sampler, enough to make me crap my pants!

i installed a proteus 2000 sound rom in my emu, after making a few mods to my platinum

booted it up the rom worked reli nice as did the other alterations, however insted of seeing 128 mb of ram it only saw 64

i nearly cried!

i alternated ram to find out what the problem was, and it was the first Dram slot

would you belive a actualy used my toothbrush to clean the offending ram slot.

ok after lots of tinkering i found out it was the rom i placed in

so if you manage to get yourself in the same situation, it could actually be the rom installed

or if anyone knows a way to get round it
lemme know

thanks ppz

I'm sure I read somewhere that if you install a ROM card, your RAM is halved no matter what. Check the manual.

The system can address up to 128 MB of sample RAM in the form of 72-pin SIMMs (4, 16, or 64 MB). [...] Unfortunately, the Ultras can address only 64 MB of sample RAM while accessing ROM, but a software control lets you temporarily disable the ROM in order to access all 128 MB of RAM.

Did nt understand the Problem ?

The E-MU can Only address 128 MB Ram.

If one of the Slots ( Flash or Rom ) are installed you have only 64 mb Ram.

64 mb + your 32 Rom or/and 32 Flash = 128 mb ;)

You can switch between this Options in the Menu ( Reboot required )

This is correct behaviour for the Emu. Since Rom's are memory mapped, they need to sit somewhere in the 128MB address space - even if you insert a 16M rom, it takes up space in the 64MB and since the EMu's Ram is not banked switched you lose have a memory "stick" or 64M in a 128M machine.

You can disable and enable the ROM from menu's - this gets back your extra 64MB and you can swap the rom in and out via a software switch. No need to pull hardware in and out.

From Emu.com om RAM

The following information provides important details regarding RAM type and configuration for these samplers:

1. Each of these samplers uses 2 RAM SIMM slots with a total capacity of up to 128MB.
2. Each one of these slots could hold up to a 64MB RAM SIMM.
3. You can use 4MB, 16MB or 64MB SIMMs in these products.
4. If you fill one slot only with a RAM SIMM, use slot 1. RAM will not be detected if it is only installed in SLOT 2.
5. If you install two similar sized RAM SIMMs, install one in each of the slots and the total memory will be the sum of the two RAM SIMMs. For example, two 16MB SIMMs will provide 32MB of sample memory.
6. If you install two different size RAMs, install the LARGER size SIMM in SLOT 1. The SMALLER sized RAM should be installed in SLOT 2.
7. When you install two different size RAM, your total amount of RAM will be the capacity of SLOT 1 plus HALF of the capacity of slot 2. For example, if you install a 64MB SIMM in slot 1 and a 16MB RAM in slot 2, you will have 72MB of total memory.

Same deal for the ROM in a slot.

I recall that you can disable the Sound ROM and enable it from the Setup Menu or maybe disc - easy to find however.
