How fast does an E-Mu Ultra change presets in multimode

Postby arkieboy » Mon Mar 09, 2009 2:21 pm

If you're running in multimode with all of your sounds in memory, how quickly does an ultra respond to program change messages? Is there a glaring dropout while the preset is changed? Or can you send a change on the last beat of one bar knowing that the new preset will be setup and ready to play on the first beat of the next?

Are the ultras any faster than the classics?

Many thanks

mines fast (much faster than my old roland gear like MKS-70 which changes the display fast, but chugs along when re-populating the actual filters or oscillators with new data).

Hi Steve

It's fast enough! I have a 10 Presets which contain breaks cut up into sixteenths. In each of the 10 Presets, I have randomly changed the order of the cut up samples. I have then assigned an external fader to change change between the 10 Presets. My sequencer then plays a midi loop with 16 linear notes and I can create drum fills by changing the Preset (sliding the fader). It is seamless!

I do get a lag if the Preset contains an RFX setup as the FX has to load in however the samples trigger off with no trouble. I've not tested this but you may also encounter a lag if the Preset contains initial Midi CC information.

Thanks, illinformed.

Anyone want to comment on the speed for the classics?
