Adding an internal HD to E6400

Postby Djrorschach » Sun Oct 18, 2009 2:46 pm

I have a spare IDE hard disk after an upgrade and i would like to try putting it in my E6400 Ultra. I opened up the device and saw there is place to screw a hard disk dirrectly on the side, however the power connector (directly on the board itself) isnt the standard molex. Could someone please tell me what type of cable i need?
Also, before i go diving in, is there anything else i should know? The hard disk i have is 250GB. Is that too big? I guess it will format as FAT32?
Also, while i have you. Is there a particular type of RAM the device takes? I’ve seen some RAM sold as ‘EMU RAM’ on ebay, but it seems a little pricey.
Cheers!

Be careful.

Search this board for info :-

* Certain drives draw too much current for the Emu power supply - check that out
* the power connector ma be reversed for 5 and 12V - check with a meter. one external site that used to have this info is now gone
* 3.5" drives are the ones that may draw too much startup current - emu's specs have info on what to look for as does a lot of pages on this board
* FAT32 on EOS 4.7 only supports up to 138 GB - 250 may work but you won't get full capacity.
* The Emu file and bank handling can also only handle 1000 banks - so sometimes you won't get full capacity of the drive itself
* 2.5" drives are practically silent - 3.5" drives can be noisy - not cool in the studio :)

This is only when formatted with the EMU file system, right?

Also, can an internal drive on the sampler be FAT-formatted without problems with the connecting PC?

Hi. Would someone be able to link to me to details for reversing the power cable? I've had a search on the forum but the site everyone links to is no longer there (and not even on google cache). I have butchered an old 2.5 inch IDE drive from a laptop...

Thanks!

How to do it:

* Get a cheap Voltmeter - analog or digital - 5 quid/10 bucks is good enough
* measure which line is +12 V to Ground (usually black wires) and which is +5v
* map it to the pins on the drive.
