upgrade the preset-RAM?

Postby Niklas » Wed May 05, 2010 12:30 pm

Hi,

Can any one tell me how to upgrade the preset-RAM on my e6400 classic?
I have 2MB of CPU, 128MB RAM and only 1MB preset RAM.

cheers

The EOS Manual tells that 1MB CPU RAM is standard on e6400 classic while E4X and E-Synth come with 4MB and the Ultra-series contain 8MB CPU RAM.
CPU RAM is used by Presets, Sequences and the Operating System.

I replaced my CPU RAM (8MB) with a 16MB SIMM taken from the standard RAM-socket when I inserted 2*64MB SIMMs. This is a long time ago. Now the display reads 7164k for Presets and 1024k for Sequences. Although this in sum is 8188k (less than 8MB) I think that before I had less RAM available for Presets and Sequences.
I don't know where the rest is gone. It's maybe masked by other peripheral addresses and/or allocated by EOS.

This RAM-upgrade might work for you also.
FYI: The CPU RAM socket is located farther away from the front panel than the Boot-Flash RAM.

If I understand you correctly I can use standard 72 pin SIMM memory to incries my CPU RAM from 1MB to 8MB

Yes.
The CPU RAM is the same type of memory module used for Sample RAM.
As the content of the CPU RAM doesn't need to be held in memory while the unit is turned off, EMU used standard 72 pin RAM SIMMs.
The CPU Flash RAM where EOS is stored, is a different type of module. Upgrading in this regards is only possible with the special FLASH RAM modules from EMU.

I know that this works on the mainboard of the Ultras. If the socket for CPU RAM is the same as for Sample RAM on the mainboard of the classic line, then I think that you can place a standard RAM SIMM in the socket of the CPU RAM.

Interesting!
But I not sure that goes for classic. Since in the classic you have 2 JP connections, which are marked on the main board as RAM.
The JP connections can be set to 1MB and 512kb, if I’m correct.
On my classic are the JP connections set to 512, and if I try to put it to 1MB the e6400 doesn’t launch.
When I have looked on pictures on Internet I have fined that the e4x do have the RAM JP contact set on 1MB.
I was thinking that must be another JP connection, which should be plugged or a circuit that is missing on my e6400.

It might be a combination of RAM SIMM & jumper-settings-
We might need some pictures of the mainboard and area around the RAM-socket(s) of the e6400 classic as well as E4X or E-Synth classic to compare the settings and draw further conclusions.

Anybody out there with e6400 classic and E4X/E-Synth classic who can help in this regards?

Here is a picture on the main board on the e6400 classic.
I have marked where the jumpers are located with a red arrow.
(I have mentioned that it was 1M/512k, which is wrong. It should be 1M/256k)

Can any one contribute with pictures on the e4x and e-synth classic?

cheers

Hmmm ...

What is written on the SIMM in CN14, right of the polyphony-board?
Because somewhere it is written that CPU FLASH can be upgraded on the classic line samplers, I think that the SIMM in CN14 is actually the CPU Flash RAM (or Boot Flash RAM).
Therefore I think that U58 & U59 are the CPU RAM.
I can't be sure as these ICs are unlabled or let's say "I can't read anything on this picture".

Ok, here are more pictures on the memory, which is located on the right side of the “poly-board” and on the U58 and U59 ICs.

The ICs in U58 & U59 are the CPU RAM.

"MT4C16257DJ" stands for Micron Technology DRAM, 256k x 16 EDO, 5.0V RAM-chips with a capacity of 256k x 16 Bit = 4 megabit = 512 kilobyte
"C" indicates that a 5.0V power supply is required.
"DJ" indicates the IC-type: 40-pin SOJ

As written in the manual e64, EIV, e6400 and E4K are equipped with just 1MB of CPU RAM while E4X and E-Synth come with 4MB. That's 4 times more memory.
Therefore E4X & E-Synth use 2x 2MB RAMs instead of 2x 512KB RAMs like in e64, EIV, E4K and e6400.
E4X & E-Synth maybe use RAMs of the type "1024k x 16" respectively "1Meg x 16".
Micron once manufactured RAMs of the type MT4C1M16EDJ with 42-pins.
Closeup pictures of the area around U58 & U59 would be very helpful. (Hoping that an angels descends from heaven and provides the pictures... ;) )

You sure recognized that the MT4C1M16EDJ RAMs have 2 pins more, that are required for adressing of higher memory areas.

The jumpers on the right hand side configure how these ICs are treated: as 1Meg x 16 or 256k x 16 RAMs
If you have "1Meg x 16" RAMs installed then you have to set both jumpers to the 1M-position to (I think) re-route address lines for accessing the higher memory areas.

An upgrade is only possible if you unsolder/remove the installed RAMs in U58 & U59 and replace them with two MT4C1M16EDJ, if you can get them somewhere and get to know how the RAMs with the two additional pins are installed.

Thanks :)
That was very help full.
I do believe that is much more easier to get an ultra sampler if I want more out of an eos sampler.

cheers
