How about a Poll

Postby JAHFUNK » Wed May 25, 2011 2:20 am

It would be interesting to know how we use our samplers. So here is a poll.

Do you use your samper...

1 As a rompler (off the shelf sounds eg discs)
2 As a breaks tool
3 As a synth (not using the continuous controllers)
4 As a synth (using the continuous controllers to edit sounds in real time)
5 As a digital recorder
6 As a analogue to digital interface
7 As a external fx unit (midi clock source filter/pan/vol/RFX ect)
8 Other (eg midi patch bay)

Please add to the list if your sampler has any other useful tasks

2, 3, 4, 7...

also, just generally as a sound design tool (record stuff in, mash it up, resample, mash up again, play like a synth/instrument).

pretty much all of them,
also like to perform life saving operations on her internals.

I noticed the other day when programming a preset how fast i have become(after 10 years of use) at hitting the buttons
and rolling the data wheel. im guessing other emu users have also developed this talent?

To me :

4 - I love controlling filters in realtime, to me the sound of filters in the E-Mus is still a killer, even compared to nowadays soft samplers. The second point is the RFXs (the one in my Platinum + the one in my E4XT ;)) They do a really good job + they're also controllable in realtime.

8 - I also convert some PC/Mac sound banks (in particular the ones with lots of velocity layers, e.g. Scarbee keyboards, etc.) keeping the attack + one or two seconds of release, doin some crossfade-looping on these samples, also getting some release samples (for example : 52 Mb for the Rhodes, 400 samples). Then I can benefit from the filters from the E-Mu, and other beautiful Fx ...

Btw, what do you mean by "as a breaks tool" ? To make drum breaks ?

Cheers,

Olivier

YEP Drum breaks and any other chopped-up loopyness.

I must agree that the filters are awesome.

There is a downloadable bank here designed to take advantage of the continuous controller features of the Ultra series. ;)
