SCM PCD-50B SCSI Card Reader - ESI 32 OS 2.1

Postby brokenmatt » Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:49 pm

Hey guys, recently got hold of a lovely sounding Esi 32.

The OS Version is 2.1, it already has the SCSI card.

I am now just trying to put in a few extras like an internal drive for storage and external cd rom. I have already got hold of one SCSI HDD by Compaq (550meg), the Emu saw this drive but when i went to format it stated No Disk Present and failed. (I guess it just wasnt compatible)

My questions are what are the best value for money HDD that work in the 2.1OS ESi 32.

I am also open to zip drives or anything like that just to get a reasonable amount of storage.

I spotted the SCM PCD-50B SCSI Card Reader, which seems a reasonable price and allows you to them use compact flash, does this work with the ESI 32 os 2.1?

Matt.

Hello!

The Power Supply of the ESI32 can´t manage the power for an internal hard disk!

But you can install an internal 100MB zip drive.

But when I remembered correctly, there were some issues with the OS 2.01. Perhaps something with scsi..

Some infos eventually important for you:

http://www.milton.arachsys.com/nj71/ind ... u=3&page=1

And you have still the possbility to upgrade the OS to the final 3.02.
It´s not an software update! You must change two eproms!

With the latest OS the ESI make a big step forward.....

Thanks for the info chris, yeah i had already rigged up the power to come from a caddy so the drive spun up. So i had already factored that in.

The SCM PCD-50B SCSI Card Reader is what I am really interested in now, rather than messing around with out of date zip drives or hdd.

Where would i get the Os upgrade chips from?

Hi!

In the USA you can buy the two eproms here:

http://www.eprelectronics.com/store/E-m ... eries-c29/

For europe, especially germany, I can give you more informations. Because here in germany I know someone who can burn the two eproms for you. And it is not expensive!
I you have someone who can burn eproms for you, I can send you the two OS files.

Hello!

Had a look into my incoming emails.

I had found an email adress from one guy here in the forum.
He got the two OS files from me, via email on 02.02.2011. For burning his own eproms.
Think he came from UK.
So at first try to contact him:

d.winsbury@btconnect.com

If you can´t get the eproms from him, let me know. So I will contact the german guy.

Good luck!

I checked the american site btw, and the eproms worked out rather reasonable but even tho they weigh a tiny amount they are adding 40 dollars for shipping which is a complete ripoff for something that would weight less than a letter.

So definately go with your guy or the guy in england i think.

The gent emailed me back with a link to his auction and I purchased them yesterday, chips arrived this morning and installed.

Everything is working, (except the HDD i was trying which actually turned out to be non functional)

So with 3.02 I am gonna get a PCD-50B Card Reader and Compact flash as it will save on noise too.

Good News!

Please don´t forget that the Power Supply of the ESI can´t handle internal harddisks!

IMHO the best solution is a little external scsi tower with a CDRom Drive and a Harddisk.

Haha yes, I remember we had the drive powering off of an external Caddys hard drive power,

It powered up fine, although it just constantly clicked. Dead as a dodo unfortunately, should get a refund tho.

Not suprised it was broken, the company on ebay shipped it to me in a jiffy bag not a hdd box with padding.
