I've tried searching this board but it's hard to tell what I'm supposed to be looking out for.

All I want to know how to do is the easiest way of getting samples into my EMU. The bloke I bought it off said he was also selling a SCSI CD drive so I said throw it in... Was this necessary?

Can I easily transfer files from my PC or Virus TI into my sampler?

Any help and resources will be appreciated!

virus TI: I know nothing about it.

PC: I do it on a e5000 ultra, and it's a breeze.

load OS 4.7 on the emu

get a SCSI hard disk (any form: zip, jaz, basic hard disk, whatever)

connect disk to the emu

format it as FAT32 (so it's readable/writable by a PC)

disconnect from emu (or just remove the movable support if it's a zip or whatever)

connect to computer

load ANYTHING you have on your computer (AKAI samples etc), using the usual windows file management tools (windows explorer)

reconnect to the e5000

load. edit. save. load again. edit. save. delete. copy. whatever.

rinse and repeat.

Loading akai samples from a scsi cd drive is easy: fat32 has nothing to to with it, the format is just recognized by the emu

A few basics to Remember.

If you want to transfer samples onto a scsi device, your pc needs to have a scsi card internally fitted, or you could always use 2 zip drives,
a scsi one for the sampler
A USB one for the pc
You can then freely eject discs from one device and transfer files to the other as Ozy has pointed out, however be aware that the samples should be a max of 48k 18bit stereo, the sampler will not read files that are 24bit, so don't use just ANYTHING.

Note
If you do have a PC with a scsi card DO NOT ATEMPT TO UNHOOK THE SCSI DRIVE FROM EITHER DEVICE WHILEST POWERED UP! This is seriously not recommended if you want Your sampler to last.

Or you could try hooking a sound source up to the inputs and sample some sound, I did read somewhere that works quite well too!

I find that the best way is either SCSI card connected to sampler - very popular around here,

OR get yourself a SCSI - CF converter. Some are external, some internal (replace floppy drive) models. Scsiforamplers.com used to sell them, otherwise you can check fleabay, they often come up.

I use a 8GB CF card - I find that I don't even use my internal 40GB drive anymore, everything fits on a CF card and the transfer speeds are much faster also..

You can also use a SCSI CD rom but you are limited to EMU or AKAI libraries which are ok but the sounds are a bit aged .. of course the vintage synths and other stuff doesn't age really.

Get yourself a copy of "chicken systems translator" - great for translating banks from other formats into EMU format. It supports a number of soft samplers but unfortunately doesn't support Kontakt, which is a crying shame..

Change internal fan to one that is more quiet, another useful upgrade.

Can't believe I'm giving advice by the way, a year ago I was a complete n00b!

Gidday - I'm a noob and awaiting delivery of my E5000Ultra and have been frantically reading about SCSI transfer options all afternoon.

To be fair I've come to the conclusion that as my sampler will be permanently plugged into my mixer, I'll just sample from my Pc as I go - and (hopefully) get some creamy analogue goodness thrown in on the way!
