Hi.

I am a newcomer to this forum, an OLD user of EMU series-4 as a standalone sampler [I used a e-64 from its release date to 2008], and a total noob as far as computer music is concerned.

Now I have the chance of buying for a song a EMU 4 X Turbo, full ram expansion, full EMU library resident on HD.

I don't immediately need this machine, but I used EMUs for many years and they sound sweet. I'll take the chance of buying one for cheap, using it for tribal screams, noises, the odd ethnic instrument, the occasional self-sampled vocal riff.

I need help on one issue though.

I remember that AT THE TIME (late 90s/early 2000s) there was NO CHANCE of managing the FILES [I said "files", not samples] using a computer [as in "windows-based PC"].

I'd just like to use the PC for storing data, backup, etc., and for converting *.wav fragments [from my live recordings] into playable samples [intros, effects, etc].

Does anybody here know if in the meantime any utility was released, which could allow to copy/save/transfer files or banks to and from a EMU-4 sampler?

Via SCSI, of course. (or scsi-to-usb)

OR at least by writing compatible CDs (AKAI?) on the PC and reading them on the E-4.

With the ultra running EOS4.7 you can load and save presets and samples to a SCSI zip drive disk formatted in fat .
Then the disk can be ejected from the drive and loaded into a USB zip drive hooked up to your computer, files can then be saved to the hard drive and new data can be added to the disc for transfer to the ultra.

so the best policy is: TWO disk drives (one usb and one scsi), trading ZIPs?

Uhm... I am not so fond of ZIP...

What about capacity? What's the maximum a ZIP can hold?

No probs here, zIps work fine as a transfer medium. Simple and reliable. Any problems relate to a dodgy disk that can be replaced cheaply. You could go down the route of smidi, removable drive bays, scsi transfers.... but they all have there own issues, and judging by some of the threads I have read I think zips are the best way of getting data to and from your emu reliably

You can get drives and disks in 2 formats

100Mb - these drives only read the 100Meg discs

250Mb - these drives read both disks however the drive will read the 100 Meg disks slower than the above drive, but it will load and save to the 250 disks at a considerably faster transfer rate than the 100 drives can achieve.

You will pay more for a 250 scsi zip drive but opinion it is worth spending the extra cash for the data transfer rate and increased storage capacity (less disk swaps needed when transferring multiple files)

and just use a USB CF card reader on your PC. Also, if you get a SCSI card and Soundforge 8 or earlier, you can simply dump samples too and from your PC/EMU.

Would this work with two IDE Zip 250's, as in one in the PC, and the other in place of the floppy drive in my e5000? Anything SCSI seems horribly expensive now, i guess the sellers realise they're getting very rare. i have one IDE Zip 250 and would buy another if anyone can give me a hint whether this would work or not?! Is the EMU floppy drive an IDE type standard?

i MUST resist the temptation to grab a screwdriver and simply have a look tonight, cos frankly, i'm a little tipsy...

I have my own question as a newbie to Emu Samplers!

I have A ESI 2000 with 3.02 os with Iomega 100 Zip Drive attached by Scsi
I would like to know if the following is possible.

If I fit an IDE Zip drive in to my PC can I send wav. files to zip disks?
Can I then eject the disk and place them into my Scsi Zip drive attached to my Emu and load wav. File into sampler?
Would a parallel port or USB Zip drive work also in the place of an internal Ide zip drive in the pc?
Hope that makes sense

No, you can't, as ESI does not load wav-files, (higher OS) EOS based samplers can read.
But... there's a workaround. I say You could use EMXP http://users.skynet.be/emxp/
and convert wavs to E III (X) format that the ESI can read directly, it works with SCSI, parallel and USB zip-drives,
that's what the manual says (read all about this programs possibilities), so it works (should work) by exchanging the medium from parallel/USB to SCSI-zip, like you imagined. Personally only "fiddled around" on EMXP with Emax I and II floppies yet. Hope this helps.

Cheers for your help and reply. I am now making Emu Esi Zip Disks using an ide Zip drive on my pc using sample converter. I can only get files from Akai or Emu CD sample disks at present though. I can also mount virtual drives and take samples from them for my zip disks. Im happy i got it doing what i want. I also have a great scsi card for the pc that is amazing! Happy newbie Emu user! The Akai is not just catching dust!
