How can I get samples from mac to E-MU E6400 Ultra???

Postby morrisj » Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:17 pm

Hi everyone, great forum you have here.

I am new to E MU samplers. I have just aquired an E MU E6400 Ultra and know very little about it. I do know it has 74mb ram, an internal hard drive, a floppy disk drive and is running OS v4.61.

I also have a macbook pro running snow leopard (os x 10.6.8) and wish to move some samples (.wav's or .aiff's) to the E MU.

Is there a simple way to do this???

Ideally I am looking for the cheapest method. I don't want to spend lots on rare usb to scsi leads, third party conversion software etc.. I also don't have a floppy disk drive for my mac and would rather not go down that route as I expect it to be very slow. Can I use an external scsi cd rom drive to move samples? Will my E MU even recognise .wav and .aiff files?? I have tried to research this but can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere so would really appreciate anyones experience of what must be a common issue.

Thanks,

James

The easiest way is using a FAT32-formatted CF card.
This means that you have to update EOS from 4.61 to 4.70, get a SCSI-Cardreader like the PCD-50B, an USB-cardreader for your MAC and of course a CF card of minimum 4GB.

You can't use CD-ROM as EOS can't read CDs with a file-format other then EOS FAT, AKAI, Roland or Ensoniq.
WAV- and AIFF-files can be read but only from floppy disc or FAT32-formatted media (EOS 4.70).

i use a usb zip drive connected to the mac, and a scsi zip drive connected to the EMU. Both are cheap as chips on ebay these days. Save files as 16 bit, 44.1k wav files and the emu should be able to read them.

I use this method too, but you need to upgade EOS to 4.70 because this allows the Emu to recognize FAT formated discs, you are then able to transfer files to and from the Mac and sampler, not just WAV- and AIFF-files but presets, banks, and sequencer files too. This is great if you want to download other users banks posted here, talking of which... I will soon create a thread in the lab section of this forum and plan to post sounds regularly for all you sampleheads

I can't wait fella! Just got a e5000 ultra and I'm struggling, would really like to examine presets and see what they are doing. If I get a usb floppy drive would I be able to transfer an e4b file to the bird and save it on the internal HD?

Yes, but the file size is limited to 1.4 MB.
The best solution is actually the SCSI Cardreader "SCM PCD-50B" where you have to use the PCMCIA-slot with an CF- or SD-adapter.
The PCMCIA-CF adapter has a higher transfer rate than the PCMCIA-SD adapter.
You also need a cardreader for your Mac/PC and of cause a CF- or SD-cards.
With the SCM PCD-50B you can plug and unplug the PCMCIA-adapter while the device is powerded on. Other solutions like the SCSI4Samplers cardreader that are a combination of a SCSI-2-IDE bridge adapter and an IDE-CF cardreader have to be switched off before inserting or removal of the CF-card.

This is looking like the best option, I watched a tutorial the other day, thought it was on youtube but can't find it now! Anyways, thanks for the info. I know I am late on the EMU scene, but it's great to see so many people still use them.

Is there a way of burning an EMU format cd? I have an external SCSI cd drive.

An Emu cd rom is easy to burn, just use the normal cd backup option on your burning software, such as Nero.
Authoring a rom however is a whole lot harder, see this article, http://www.tweakheadz.com/CDR.html

Another option could be this software http://www.zicweb.com/disk2file/index.php?lg=us this program copies scsi drives in raw format and creates an ISO file, that can be burned by your chosen software.

I have not tried either of these, so I can't really say which is the best, although the second option seems simpler.
