I'm in a world of pain! I've bought the same hard drive and IcyDock from the spec in Jahfunks doc. and made myself a lead. it powers up fine, the E-MU recognises it, but when I go to format it... "Unspecified error" with "failed writing block 0" underneath it. Bugger!

I know the power cable is right way round as it was already reversed because the HDD that died was a 40gb.

I tried formatting with a USB to IDE dongle but i'm struggling to recognise the disk with this.

pins 33 and 44

i only asked as its different on the emaxes but we stick a slim floppy on those now

i also know why cf card drives dont work on the ide buss the platter spin signal for searching the hd is not connected on a ide to cf adapter

this is a i/o signal because the cf cards dont need them they neither receive it or return the signal im trying to rig up a circuit that will fool the on board ide chip

@paul_the_bishop:

Mount all drives and again try to format the IDE-drive directly.
In the beginning I also had some issues with the WD Blue drive which had something to do with the power saving mode.

I may have got my pin-outs a little confused as I did manage to format it, but that was with leads temporarily assembled. Now I've everything together properly I can't even see it it on the E-Mu. Hopefully I haven't damaged anything. I'm gonna grab some more connectors and make some better leads (these ones are now munted).

Sorted an back in the game. JahFunk's method is solid... way more solid than my leads were. Now i've soldered it all up and got my pin-outs right it appears good to go! It did take a couple of attempts to format though (got a disk error first time but ignored it and tried again).

Hi Paul.
It looks like you still have to fix the bay internally. These images from member plz may help.
They show how to fix the bay.
Note the 4 holes drilled into the case.

Yeah mate all over it. I've actually done some sneaky cable-tying inside so it's not flopping around all over the place until I get it secured properly.

I'm surprised the government need anyone to fabricate anything for them, they are quite good at fabricating stuff.
Eg The truth about UK economy, health services, crime, employment, international occupation of areas strategic financial importance. And so on.
Haha

Well its all there but!
It seems a bit weird to put the power socket on the front face, especially when the enclosure has plenty of space at the back.

It really doesn't matter thou, so long as the unit does the job, the removable IDE bay to USB setup is a cool system.

As an added bonus you can copy your HD data to a second HD, mount it into the spare caddy for use as a backup if you are touring, this will avoid any real down time as the replacement drive is mounted in a couple of seconds.
