Internal HD for E64?

Postby muckleby » Sun Apr 28, 2013 11:50 pm

I'm looking to fit an internal hard drive to my E64 running EOS 3.
Can anyone give me some tips on what to look for?
I presume SCSI is my one option, not sure about connection types / pin numbers though?
Also am unsure about max size?
Anything else I need to think about?
Can I format the drive with the 64 once it's fitted?

After a little more research I think I'm looking for a 50 pin SCSI drive, which will have up to 9GB accessible.
Can anyone confirm this?
Still have no idea about formatting.
Also is it possible to store an upgraded OS on the drive?
Cheers!

Yes I think it's 9GB scsi on this machine.
Format the HD with EOS Format once fitted in the Emu.
You must update the Samplers OS from a floppy disc, I don't think you can have it in the HD memory. The OS is held onboard in non volatile memory and you can insert empty floppies and copy the OS onto these at any time.

niceone, thanks jahfunk.
you know if i'll have any luck with 80 pin to 50 pin SCSI adapters?
old 50 pin drives are rare (i.e. expensive!).

I think you will find that the scsi drive needs to be either type 1 or 2
These will usually be 50 or 68 pin drives
Just make sure the drive is not the later, faster type 3 drives (ultra scsi I believe)
I tried the later larger capacity drives and had no joy
So watch out for that ;)

Surprise surprise, it's the type 1/2 drives that are expensive!
Good to know what to look for though, thanks man.

Have you considered a 1gb external Iomega Jaz drive, these take removable discs and so you have no limit on storage.
Some users have found this removable media less reliable than a HD, however important data could always be duplicated onto a second disc very cheaply. You also face increasing odds that a very old SCSI hard drive could have a catastrophic failure, but in this scenario you loose all of your data.
I have used jaz drives in the past and had no probs.
You can trawl eBay and find 1GB Jaz discs for about £4 EACH
