I know this is an old post but I would like to know this too. I couldn't find a definitive answer to using the Proteus ROMS in a NON-Ultra E4 (Esynth).

Can anyone confirm?

Comparing the schematics SK503 of the "polyphony board" of the 2nd generation sampler (e6400, e-synth, E4X and E4X Turbo) with the schematics SK10485 of the E4 Ultra mainboard (= 3rd generation sampler), I conclude that the P2K ROM boards will work with the 2nd generation samplers.

Yes but this not true of all roms.. newer ones, for lack of a better description, will not be recognised. I have both an e4x turno and an e4xt ultra. Some r
oms like the vrom, tcsy rom, and qrom1 were not detected by the older e4x while the xl1/7 holy grail mophatt and p124 were..

OK interesting. I have Planet earth and Virtuoso 2 I'd like to try out. I'm not going to fry anything buy trying them out in the Esynth classic right?

Well, if anyone is interested, I have just tried the following ROMS in an ESynth Classic (non-ultra) running EOS 4.01:

9062: Pure Phatt 32 MB ROM - standard in Mo'Phatt, MP-7 and MK-6. (mine was the MP7 Rom)
9066: Protean Drums 32 MB ROM - Standard in PX-7
9086: Orchestral Session Vol. 2 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
9087: World Expedition 32 MB ROM - standard in Planet Earth.

They were all recognized and all gave me some presets except for the PX7 which only gave me samples. Don't know if all the presets were there but there definitely seems to be a hefty selection.

Interesting.

I am going to leave the World and Orchestral Roms in there. They sound so much better than in the proteus and they suit me more than the Esynth Roms.

On that note, I might put the Esynth ROMS up for sale - anyone interested?
