I have read that the later production runs of emu rom cards were presets and samples flashed to sound flash ram instead of roms and upon examining both a sound rom and sound ram they look exactly the same.

So what is it that makes it rom instead of ram? and can this be reversed?

basically I have 2 e-synth roms exactly the same and want to wipe one and use it a sound ram. Anyone no how??

i have the esynth and orbit/phat roms.. my orbit/phat rom is burnt on a flash ram simm. you can tell the difference because the chips on the simm will read "intel flash" for ones that are flash ram.. also, when installed in your emu it should display 'sound flash installed' during the boot process.

i also have a composer rom simm which appears to be burnt on a flash ram simm as well.. i've read that nearing end of emu hardware production they had an excess of sound flash simms and burned a bunch of standard rom sounds to them and sold them as 'roms' (like the composer, phatt, vintange etc etc.) to try to get rid of the excess inventory.

you can back up the samples & presets from the ram card by loading them into memory and saving it as bank. then, if it is a flash simm you actually have, you can go to Master -> Bank -> Author to write new data to it. there is a manual (attached) that details how this is done. personally, i've never bothered to try it. i have always wanted to but i would want to use up all the available space and doing so would take a lot of time to program it efficiently.

do you have a proteus 2000 module you want to use the RAM with or are you just wanting to have samples permanently loaded in memory for use with the Emu?

ooops i must have been looking at two flash boards just realised. haha i have the bits from 3 different e-mu's lying around everywhere so you'll have to forgive me. I just read about the late sound roms being burned to flash and saw what i wanted to see i think....
Yes your right they don't even look the same regardless of the intel chip.

Yes have a vintage pro with techno synth rom & xtream lead rom (not burned on flash haha) and wanted to use the spare esynth rom rather than it sitting there doing nowt or going through the hassle of selling.
I used to have a 16mb sound flash but sold it along with my e5000 about 10years ago. I never even used the flash because i had an scsi HD in the sampler and no proteus at the time (infact i didnt even no about sound authoring at the time or protei modules).

I suppose i will just sell the esynth rom now if anyone wants it.

do you use your proteus often? I hate programming mine. Its easier with the prodatum software but then its not much different to using a plugin.

oh well no luck i guess. i've had the p2k for something like 14 years and still use it quite a bit. the presets are not always great, but i find it really shines for programming pads and technoish sounds. prodatum is a godsend. i used mine for a long time before a decent editor came out. for me, the filters and routing options still make it a viable option compared to modern vsts.. i wouldn't sell mine.. especially considering what they go for these days. you can get a p2k for less than an expansion rom!
