Actually I was thinking of upping the price range and going for something a bit more spicy like an avalon maybe? allthough idd still like to know what ones would be good in that price range aswell?

Oh yeah and finally my question is, is it really worth it when I can get software for nothing?

i dig my focusrite compounder soo much that i just bought a second on. they're cheap and sound really fat. got my first one off ebay for $500 CDN. which is equal to 180 quid. all focusrite products are sick, can't go wrong with them IMO. hope this helps..ez

Hey go to www.fmtaudio.com and check out the RNC compressor. It's not a tube compressor but in does the job for around $170 US. For the price range you're looking at you could get 5 of them! Read the history on the RNC and you might be convinced.

Yep, can really recommend the RNC. I mainly use it in 'supernice' mode which gives the impression of stacking a few compressors on top of each other. In my opinion it's better on a final mix that individual tracks although it sounds great on a drum track.

Old topic, but definitely one worthy of address. First, RNC's suck ass for anything that has bass in it. Ok for vox, sound effects but don't expect any balls out of anything you put through it. Ok at controlling crazy peaks I guess, but no charater and no balls.

A Distressor is pretty sick from what I gather. All folks that I know use them speak of them highly. They do a good job of emulating Urei's. I can vouch especially for a personal favorite: the Urei 1178. It's a stereo/dual mono version of the 1176 compressor and it is AMAZING!!! It's not great at making things small. It's good at making things BIG. Drums, percussion and bass do great with this thing.

A friend use to use a Compounder and got really good results with it too.

There are lots of options out there for compression, and it's one of the most misunderstood and difficult things to use well in sound engineering. One thing I can say is "DO NOT skimp on your compressor." Bad compression is worse than none at all.
