SCSI zip drive

Postby DS-1 » Tue May 13, 2003 11:12 am

Just got mine last night (thought it wasnt gonna make it). I got it out of the box and it occurs to me that I dont have the right cords to hook it up to my emu (or my scsi card for that matter). Im gonna try to make it out today and get an adapter for it, but i was wondering. The is 2 connections on it, one ffrom the zip to my scsi card (thats how it is in the manual) and there is a spot for another peice of scsi gear.
What is the correct way to hook this up? 1 out to the scsi card and the other to my sampler? Or do i just plug my sampler into it when i need it and unplug it when i need to send samples via scsi?

I would recommend one end of the chain terminating at your computer and one terminating at the EMU w/ everything going through the zip drive. Just be sure to give each piece a dif SCSI ID (actually i think the ID for your EMU is static (#6) as is the ID for your computer). You might have to play with the configuration as well (which SCSI socket on the zip drive the computer and sampler go into - its not supposed to make a difference, but it did on my system). Lastly, remember that the zip disks that work for your computer will not work for the EMU and vice versa. If your computer gives you a "should I initialize or eject this disk" type message simply ignore it, go about your biz on the EMU and then eject the disk.

Hope this helps

Hi

there is two ways to do this. you can do it maxmax's way and have each disk formatted to the format you want at the time either being EMU format or FAT format for your PC. This will require you to need more than one disc obviously or you can do what I do. I only have the zip drive going straight to the sampler. I figure my computer Hard drive is big enough do I really need that extra lousy 100mb? It isn't going to benefit me any. I find scsi can be really finicky at times if you don't get it right and can cause many headaches. You can change the scsi id of the sampler in the master section from 6 to another cause i think the zip drive can only be set to 5 or 6... and they are reversed from what i remember. If you put it on 5 it will actually be 6 and 6, 5. I think it was a flaw. =/. The scsi ID of your computer will 99% be 7 which I think is unchangeable as it is programmed into the bios of your scsi card this way. Now for not having the right connection. Depending on where you go scsi stuff can get to be quite expensive as it isn't mainstream and only for select people. The connector/convertor will probably cost just as much as a whole new cable so I would just go that route to have the best connection. Try and get a double shielded one and don't go any longer than 6 feet if you want to maintain integrity. Things should be fine from there. If you have problems like I did you can always order in the 2nd scsi port for your emu which costs about $50 and really helps solve some of those headaches.

One last thing too.. the new emu EOS 4.7 CAN and DOES do FAT file support on top of EOS HOWEVER it is not recommended that you mix the two on one zip disk as this can result in data loss. Try and stick with one or the other.

Its nice though to be able to send a sample via SCSI to the sampler instead of recording it in. For example, if you have a cym that sounds great on the EMU's filters but needs a bit of reverb, you can send it to your PC, put the reverb on (destructivly) in logic or in my case, DigiP, and send it back to the sampler without and D/A A/D conversions, which result in the loss of higher order harmonics

very true. that is to be taken into effect. That method of hooking it up to your pc for that matter totally slipped my mind.

it tells me that its an invalid whatever everytime I go to the save a bank. just flip the drive parameter from zip to floppy and back to zip and it should come up. otherwise you need to go to the disk section and make sure the disk is formated and that you've hit mount and mounted the drive.

this should work .. let me know if it doesn't
