Got me a e64... how can I expand it (disk-wise / EOS)

Postby volltreffer » Mon Nov 01, 2004 10:43 am

Hi!

Got me a used (well that seems kinda natural) e64 of ebay for 150? (~ 150$). I thought it was not a bad deal. Now I'm thinking of expanding it a little. Ram should be not too much problem, it already has 48M and I think I still have some 64M bars.

But when it comes to internal disks: does anyone know
a) how big a disk can be for the older machines?
b) how to install them? There was something with the power chords that were swapped... (pos and neg is that right?)
c) does it have to be SCSI or IDE?
d) someone ever installed a ZIP/MO instead of the diskette drive? (Well after upgrading to a newer EOS)?
e) the e64s are said to run the same EOS as the ultras (at least thats what I read). If I go to the download section at EMU, I see a EOS 4.62. Is there any possibility of running 4.7? (I assume I should NOT use the flash prep disk then - I had already cleared my flash with it at the e4xt ultra  ).

An alternative would be to use external SCSI (got quite a lot of that stuff), but then its two boxes to carry....

Why did I buy the beast? Well I want to have one in the rehearsal room, and already spend some NICE times trying to have my XT with RFX NOT do strange things like 'farting' a.s.o. - can be quite anoying).

Loadsa thanx in advance,

aXel

i have one too and i bought a 9 go Hd ( old scsi seagate barracuda ) , and it works great so far . For the eos , if you want to upgrade you need to put more memory ( 1mo stock of flash ) but it works with until the eos 3.o.Concerning the hard drive you have an internal scsi socket ( mine had the power supply for an extra drive when i bought it not sure for yours but open it up and you'll see . )
Just one thing i just love this old piece of gear ( something about the converters , i never tried the ultras though )
hope it gonna help !

Thank you very much...

How do you upgrade the flash for using a newer EOS? Did you upgrade it yourself? Is it one of the flash sims that need to be upgraded (like baby flash or so) or is there some flash on the motherboard?

Looking forward to that machine...

unfortunatly i think you need to get the upgrade from 95 or so ( yes it's the simm on the mother board ) .i saw it for sale on ebay ( with the sound expansion too ) .Well ask somebody else to be sure , since i never wanted to go over the eos 3.0 ( cause you don't have the risc processor so i'm not sure the new improvements the newers eos bring would be useful for the 64 )

THX alot, I think I might be trying to lok out for the expansion board; it seems convenient to me to have two identical EOS versions on my two samplers....
