am buying E4XT - what should i check?

Postby middleman » Wed Jul 20, 2005 11:20 am

hi

i am buying an E4XT ultra next week and going to pick it up in person. i have never used an emu sampler before - ok, i have, but not since i owned an emax mark 1. to check that it is working i am going to spend half an hour running some checks on it when i pick it up...i was wondering if anyone could add anything that i should especially watch out for?

things i am planning to test:

- loading and saving from IDE internal drive
- playback of samples/presets through all the analogue outputs
- playback of MIDI files through MIDI input
- sampling through audio input
- all buttons and knobs and that....

i am going to take an rm1x to test midi and sampling-input, a mini mixer to test the outputs and headphones to hear....

any other really obvious things i should look for? is there an easy way to test the SCSI buss? i guess i could take a SCSI CD-rom and try loading a sample cd?

thanks in advance for any help

will

If it is sold by the orginal owner i would't worry and just ask it it is 100% okay. If that EMU has been its baby he will not lie about it... i think. The honor of fellow EMU owners or something.

By the way, i never realized how rugged these EMU's are until i received one by airmail with a completely twisted rack ear. Someone must have dropped it from the top of the plane straight to the concrete or squeezed it with extreme force. It took me some sweat to bend the rack ear back.

Anyway, i only had to open it up and put some plugs back in place. It was still working. Durable stuff you know!

The only problem I've come across with Emu samplers is the data wheel going bad - give this a good check. Any other problems you might come across tend to be due to loose connections inside.
