hi all,

i'm quite new to my E6400 Ultra, and am just now really getting into it... i just have a couple of questions:

1. What does the Aux Envelope actually control? I've fiddled with it a bit but can't really seem to get any results out of it...

2. And, with all of the envelopes, do the amounts refer to time, or percentage of the sample... for example, if i say put an attack time of 100, and all the Decay, sustain and release times at 0, is the attack going to roll in the full length of the sample - no matter what sample it is? like, say i have a 5 second drum break, will that then take 5 seconds for the attack to reach it's full level? or, is it something else?

Auxiliary Envelopes.. Just like it is, auxiliary. You can use the Envelopes for anything. Technically, you can use any of the ADSRs for anything. You just gotta mess about.

As for the second question. It has to be time based. If it was sample length then that means my looped test tones woule either never fade in, or they would fade in at rapid, and i mean rapid, intervals.

Becareful with the sustain portion. If you set this wrong, you will have the sampler sort of lock up and the sustain will last forever and adding to this... it will constantly be growing in loudness. It wont stop EVER.

And if you do get the sampler stuck... here is what you do after thinking to yourself "oh my god... what have I done?" Turn you mixer down and then go into master mode and select one of the test tones. Play that and it will sort of reset the sampler. The test tones are viscously loud by the way. They are ment to be after all. Just thinking about it makes my ears hurt.

but i still don't get the aux env's... i mean, the amp env controls the amplitude, the filter env controls the filter... what is the auxiliary?

You can assign it to modulate almost anything in the cords page. I can understand your question becuase at first it seems a bit redundant, but it's there to give you choice. Those nice guys from emu weren't just happy with an amp and filter envelope!

The question is what should you assign it to? Well depends what you want really. You can always assign it to pitch, that's always a good one. You could patch it to lfo rate on a nice pad or something. You could sum the filter and aux envelope and end sort of end up with a 12 stage envelope!!!

I recommend patching the aux to pitch at first and then experimenting with the aux envelope values. If you do this for a synth sample then it will give you instant and obvious results.

Aux envelope to LFO speed always makes me smile!

I made a pretty convincing laser sound from an Atari game using the Aux ADSR's. Not sure what game it reminds me of. Space invaders.. but that doesn't seem right. Maybe I will post the patch config....

ok, so... what i'm understanding is that the aux envelope doesn't control anything by default - until you actually assign it to something with a cord... is this correct?
(unlike the amp env and the filter env's that already control something directly without it being assigned to anything...)

Well, see that isn't entirely correct. The amp and filter ADSR's are by default hooked up to something via the mod matrix. You can, if you want to, control filter automation with the Amp ADSR and so on. Heck, I have used the pan CC to control other things and not pan. It can be hard to override the cc's natural inclination to control what it is default, but you can do it.
