Hi all,

Have had a good search through these forums and am still a little stuck.

I have just purchased a 2nd hand E-IV Classic - all good. Except the backlight in the LCD display is dead. The display works fine but is very very hard to see.

I can buy a new LCD display from a US company who still sell them.

I have taken the E-IV to a non-EMU technician and he said that the issue is not the LCD itself but most likely in the power supply that supplies juice to the back light bulbs.

But he needs a Service Manual before he can determine if his theory is correct.

Sadly, here in NZ, EMU have no support - the guy I took it to is going to try to source a Service Manual...

So - anyone have any ideas of where I can get a Service Manual?

I have just changed the power supply of my EMU IV. And it is very easy !
I have found on Ebay a new PSU for 10 euros. UMEC UP0403S-01
There are still another. Here's the link :

Don't worry about the 40W.

Do you have a hard drive in the Emu? If you want to confirm it is the power supply that's the problem, temporarily disconnect the hard drive from the power supply (the hard drive draws a lot of power), and the backlight should come back to life.
If you don't have an internal hard drive, or if your backlight doesn't come back to life when you disconnect the internal hard drive, then the power supply is unlikely to be the problem.
If it is the hard drive that's draining power away from the backlight, perhaps you could just switch from an internal hard drive (powered by the Emu) to an external hard drive (self-powered) to solve your problem.

LCDs of Pre-Ultra E4 samplers use Electroluminescent sheets for backlighting...NOT bulbs..The fading effect comes naturally in time since they have a very short life span..They are very easy to repair by simply sliding out the old sheet and sliding in the new one..Some soldering involved though...Nothing is wrong with your power supply.. Here is a link for example in US..store that sells them

but you can actually make them yourself too very easy..EL sheets are available in many electronic stores.You can cut them to any size..

Hi man~im still confusing~I found that bulbs when i dismantling LCD, and u said"LCDs of Pre-Ultra E4 samplers use Electroluminescent sheets for backlighting...NOT bulbs" so whats that use for? i guess that bad bulbs cause the problem.if i fix into a new bulbs,it 'll be ok .right?

On my E4K - local E-MU technician here has fixed it - it was a backlight issue as well as an issue on the main power rail.

It was not the backlight bulbs as commonly rumoured and required a whole new display as well as fixing a fault on the power rail.

The display was relatively cheap - OEM part and brand new - but the labour content was about 4 hours.

A couple of people (not from this forum) contacted me saying it was just the bulbs - sadly this is not normally the case and it also appears that a new bulb alongside other older ones (guessing there is more then one bulb?) will make the olders malfunction sooner anyhow.

Not sure if the above makes a lot of sense but those were my findings.

Not sure where you are ..? (Guessing Auckland?)

But the technician was DATS (previously called DATS anyhow) they are in Mt Eden...name and actual address escape me right now - Sound and Vision Systems?? They are the same contact details and address as DATS - just changed name - reas. sure the tech was John Dunn...?

Sorry - I'll see if I can find the receipt and reply back in the next day or so.

No problems.

Even I found it a bit tricky to find a tech - and they charge lots too!

I took mine originally to a "tech" who was cheap and (supposedly) good. After he had the unit for 4 weeks he said he needed the Service Manual - it took me a few days but a guy at EMU (Europe) sent me the schematics and manual.

Four weeks later he said he just had to buy a bulb.

At this stage I had my doubts.

3 weeks later I called him and he said he could not fix it at all. So I collected it.

Took it to the original (as it turns out) EMU techs and they diagnosed the prob straight away. Cost $NZ 500 but 3 weeks later I had it back!

The moral of this story? When I brought it off a local auction site the guys said the backlight was an easy and cheap fix...should have done some research or got him to fix before buying!

Sigh.
